Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018: Maple Hill's Gillespie moves to top of victories list

Leading off today: Monday was a busy day for top-notch soccer across the state as the sport reached the midway point for its regular season.

Maple Hill boys coach Dan Gillespie became the state's career leader in victories, registering his 658th as the Wildcats, ranked 11th in Class C this week, beat Coxsackie-Athens 2-0.

"It means I have been around a long time," Gillespie said. "It was a good win. We've got a lot of work to do, but we're getting better."

Gillespie became head coach at Maple Hill in 1974. His Wildcats have won 20 Section 2 titles and three New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

Charlie Engle retired from Mount Markham in 2016 with 657 victories.

    • In a boys upset involving Class AA teams, Mark Tricarico scored a second-half goal for John Jay East Fishkill to secure a 1-0 win over No. 10 Arlington.

Dan Koenig and Austin Morizet combined for six saves to post the shutout.

    • In Section 11, Class A No. 10 John Glenn rode midfielder Adam Astarita's two goals an assist to a 4-0 victory over defending NYSPHSAA Class B champion Center Moriches.

Center Moriches is ranked sixth in Class B.

Astarita has 12 goals and five assists this year. Joe Randazzo and Joe Salerno also scored for Glenn, which allowed only one shot on goal.

St. A's girls triumph: Defender Emily Sanders scored one goal and assisted on the other as St. Anthony's earned a 2-0 victory over Hempstead Sacred Heart, ranked second in Class AA.

Sanders' goal came on a 40-yard blast that was intended to be a cross with 8:04 to play.

"But when it went in, I was just as happy as if it was a cross for one of the forwards to finish it," she said. "The whole season, I told myself one game I wanted to score and I wanted it to be amazing and this was definitely the game to score the goal."

Sara Micheli made 10 saves for the shutout.

    • Hannah Sugden finished with five goals and five assists as Belleville-Henderson outslugged Alexandria 12-4. Breanna Scofield scored five goals of her own and added an assist for the Panthers.

Milestones: Kailey Hyland of Malverne/East Rockaway scored her 100th career goal in soccer during a 3-2 loss to Great Neck South.

    • Alyssa Spring helped Molly McClelland set the Allegany-Limestone career record for assists on Friday. On Monday, it was McClelland helping Spring become the program's career leader in goals.

Spring cashed in a McClelland feed with 10 minutes left to complete a hat trick with career goal No. 88 during a 6-0 victory over Fredonia.

After scoring early in the second half, Spring told McClelland, with whom she helped lead the Gators to a NYSPHSAA Class C title last fall, "I'm not going to shoot it unless you're the one passing it."

HVCC bid wins again: Hudson Valley Commun- ity College is poised to retain the NYSPHSAA girls basketball semifinals and finals through 2022 after its bid on a three-year contract was recommended by both the association staff and its girls basketball committee at Monday's meeting.

The NYSPHSAA Executive Committee is expected to give final approval in February.

HVCC, which has hosted since 1996, won out over a strong bid by Corning-Painted Post High School.

Near-record effort: Saugerties receiver Sean Costello had a monster performance Friday, catching seven passes for 311 yards in a 37-8 victory against New Paltz.

The yardage total ranks second in state history. Qwuhhail Barlow rolled up 318 yards for Cortland in a 2011 game against Whitesboro.
