Leading off today: Two Upstate stars have repeated as players of the year in girls basketball on the all-sate teams for small schools announced today by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Chenango Forks senior Maggie Warpus and junior Jaydn Trocki of NYSPHSAA state champion Frewsburg were repeat picks as the top players in Classes B and C, respectively. The third POY honoree is junior Sofia Falleti of Batavia Notre Dame, the state Class D champion.
Trocki made the Class C first team for the third consecutive season.
In Class B, Jordyn Dyring of Hornell, Olivia Mulada of Cold Spring Harbor, and Cece Powell of Marcellus joined Warpus as a repeat selection on the first team.
In Class C, Brooke Kuzmich of Greenwich and Allison Bell of Lisbon joined Trocki as first-team repeaters.

Statistically speaking
• Tim Plunkett recorded six assists in Iona Prep's 16-7 lacrosse victory over Archbishop Stepinac on Thursday, pushing him past the school's career record of 212 previously held by his coach, Nick Trizano.
• Lancaster girls lacrosse goalie Madi Knaub made the 724th save of her career on Thursday, one more than the NYSPHSAA record set a season ago by Maya Soskin of Cold Spring Harbor.
• Michaela Kaltsas of Fox Lane posted three goals and three assists in a 15-4 lacrosse win over Lakeland/Panas, moving her past 300 career points.
• Parker Terrell threw a no-hitter in Vestal's 8-0 baseball win over Owego last Monday as Golden Bears coach Tank Anderson picked up career win No. 500.
• We've all heard the expression "take one for the team," but Ava Papaleo took that to an extreme Sunday, reaching base on hit by pitches four times during Ursuline's 13-3 softball win vs. Nyack.

Ninth-seeded Schenectady advanced to the Section 2 Class A flag football quarterfinals after No. 8 Saratoga Springs forfeited in the face of a potential scheduling conflict,
The Daily Gazette reported.
Had Saratoga Springs won Thursday's scheduled game, it would have faced top-seeded Shaker on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. However, the school's prom was scheduled for that evening at Saratoga Springs City Center.
Forfeits because athletes have to choose between playing or the prom are always awkward, but credit Saratoga Springs for bowing out in the first round instead of potentially triggering a walkover in the quarterfinals instead.
