Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019: Lake George boys post 50th consecutive win

Leading off today: Lake George pushed its winning streak in boys basketball to 50 games on Friday with a 75-31 rout of Schoharie in the Section 2 Class C quarterfinals at Hudson Valley Community College.

Lake George has not lost since dropping the NYSPHSAA Class C championship game to Moravia in 2017 to finish with a 21-6 record. The Warriors' 50-game streak is the ninth-longest in state history for boys basketball. (See list here.)

Chris Becker led all scorers with 19 points to go with 12 rebounds, and Mason Flatley and Connor Vidnansky finished with 15 points apiece.

Top Sec. 5 seed booted: Senior Jakhi Lucas scored six of his 30 points during a 14-0 run as University Prep eliminated top-seeded Hilton 67-64 in the quarterfinals of the Section 5 boys Class AA basketball tournament.

Lucas finished off a 22-point second half with a dish to Krystain Lee for the game-sealing bucket in the waning seconds as UPrep (10-10) climbed to the .500 for the season.

"I'll be honest. I've got the best player in Rochester with Jakhi Lucas, so anything can happen. I'll ride with him with all day," UPrep coach Demond Stewart said.

Junior Kayshawn Ross finished with 19 points to help offset 28 by the Cadets' Tahj Hill.

Hilton regained its halftime lead behind 3-pointers from Noah Malta and Colin Burkis late in the third quarter. but UPrep rattled off the first 11 points of the fourth quarter.

Girls basketball: Tatiana Stevens' rebound and bucket with 13 seconds to play following a Bryanna Picton miss gave top-seeded Longwood a 45-43 win over Northport for the Section 11 Class AA championship.

Longwood's most recent title had been in Class A in 2000.

Foul-plagued Northport trailed by 13 at the end of the third quarter but closed to within 38-34 before Nyia Longford (19 points) broke the momentum with a long jumper and Stevens added a lay-in with 2:25 to go.

Northport fought back once more and tied the contest at 43 as Shea Cronin made an open 3-pointer with :31.8 remaining.

The Canton girls won their seventh straight Section 10 crown with a 53-44 victory over Gouverneur in the Class B title game.

Katie Chisholm paced the Golden Bears with a game-high 14 points.

Football notes: The smallest brand of football played in the state is about to become the largest league in Section 9.

Spackenkill, Ellenville and Onteora have become the latest programs in line to make the switch to eight-man football according to Hudson Valley Sports Report. Millbrook had announced earlier that it is also going to eight-man this fall, so the league is shaping up to have 12 teams.

"As of right now we are planning on a 12-team league for the 2019 season with two six-team divisions divided by region," said Sullivan West AD David Franksevicz, the eight-man rep on the sectional football committee.

Ellenville played in Class B a year ago and the other three competed in Class C.

Spackenkill, a Class B program as recently as 2017, has been without a JV program for the last several years. Millbrook played last season without a modified or JV team.
