Leading off today: Senior quarterback Cooper Fuller ran for 243 yards and five touchdowns on Thursday to lead Bayport-Blue Point to a 49-21 victory over Miller Place for the
Suffolk County Division IV championship at Stony Brook University.
The victory was the 34th in a row for the Phantoms, the three-time defending Section 11 champions who move on to next week's Long Island Championship.
Bayport-Blue Point (11-0) opened with a 10-play, 67-yard drive capped by Fuller's 2-yard TD run. Miller Place answered with an 18-play, 73-yard scoring march that included six third-down conversions.
B-BP then started pulling away with a 30-yard TD run by Collin Reyer and a 3-yard scoring carry by Fuller. Fuller scored from four yards out one play after the Phantoms recovered the second-half kickoff.
Scare in Section 5
A 14-year-old female track athlete was hospitalized in serious but stable condition on Wednesday after she collapsed during practice at Rochester Prep School, local media reported.
According to the Rochester Police Department, the unidentified teen was running through school hallways for practice when she collapsed and became unresponsive. Another student notified a staff member, who began CPR until an ambulance arrived.
File this away for next fall
What will the Ward Melville girls soccer team do for an encore? Well, the Patriots ran the table (again) the last two times someone asked that question.
When the Patriots defeated Arlington, 1-0, for the NYSPHSAA Class AAA championship last weekend, they completed a three-peat and also extended their unbeaten streak to 63 games (56-0-7) since the start of the 2022 season. According to Newsday, Ward Melville has surrendered more than one goal in a game just four times during that impressive run.
Ludden's Cassalia hands over the reins
Pat Cassalia, who began his career coaching boys soccer at the school, has stepped down as the girls soccer coach at Bishop Ludden after more than two decades in that role.
Cassalia, 79, whose teams went 63-11 over the past four seasons, will be replaced by assistant coach Chris Schroth.
"He does all the training sessions. He's been with me to devise game plans, to talk about how we want to attack, what formations we're going to use," Cassalia told Syracuse.com. "He does all that stuff with me, and it's just more time for him to take over and for me to step back."

The allegations stemming from an August incident that led to the Lake George, Warrensburg and Bolton school districts cutting short the football season for the state's top-ranked Class D team resulted in a pair of arrests, local media outlets reported this month.
According to WTEN-TV, two students, ages 17 and 18, were charged with public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child. The alleged incident happened on Aug. 31 on a Lake George Central School District bus returning from Syracuse. Police said members of the Warrensburg/Lake George/Bolton team engaged in a lewd act against a juvenile on the bus, the station reported.
The three districts terminated the Wolverines' unbeaten season (8-0) on the eve of the Section 2 tournament quarterfinals.
In light of the investigation and arrests, officials of the school districts said disciplinary action will be taken according to each district's code of conduct. Coaches and players will review the athletic code of conduct before the winter and spring season.
