Leading off today: Canastota volleyball coach Marcia Laidlaw recorded career victory No. 900 with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-15 victory over Little Falls on Thursday.
"Just old," she joked, according to Syracuse.com.
After the win, Laidlaw, 76, received a police escort back to Canastota. She said it's been all about one thing in her 50-plus years of coaching.
"I always jokingly say that I’ve never played these games," Laidlaw said. "The young ladies who have bought into this system over the years are the ones that played them. So many players have been part of it to make this moment happen."
Laidlaw is the second-winningest girls volleyball coach in New York, behind retired Eden coach Stephen Price (991), according to the website.
Laidlaw has also coached varsity field hockey (292 wins), softball (195), boys volleyball (73), and girls track (31) at Canastota.
Another milestone on the horizon
Mekeel Christian Academy boys basketball coach Chad Bowman will be chasing career win No. 500 on Friday vs. Troy Prep.
Bowman began at what was then known as Schenectady Christian in 1993.
Section 7 career scoring record falls
Crown Point standout
Trevor Harris poured in 47 points during a 60-48 boys basketball victory over Indian Lake/Long Lake to become the Section 7 career leader in scoring.
Harris stands at 1,752 points. The record was set by Schroon Lake's Andrew Pelkey (1,744) in 2020.
Coach Jason Hughes pulled Harris at the start of the fourth quarter in the hope of letting him break the record on the home court, but plans changed when the Orange stayed close down the stretch.
"Trevor has tremendous respect for Andrew Pelkey and he's highly aware of the rare air he is now in," Hughes told The Press-Republican.
