Sept. 6, 2025: Section 11 revamping football schedule after losing another team

Leading off today: Small-school football in Section 11 suffered another blow on Friday when Greenport/Southold/Mattituck had to drop its varsity program for the 2025 season.

"We held on for so long trying to get enough players," Greenport AD Brian Toussaint told Newsday. "We were hoping once school started that we'd get an uptick of students out for football. But we only had ninth-graders join."

Greenport, Southold, and Mattituck have fielded a combined team for three decades. Toussaint said the plan is to have a junior varsity team this season and return to varsity action next fall. Unfortunately, that leaves seniors unable to play at either level this fall.

On Wednesday, Southampton, which combines with The Ross School, also dropped the sport for the season due to low turnout. The loss of two teams in a week leaves Suffolk Division IV with 10 active programs, which will require re-working the entire schedule to give each a full nine-game slate.

Week 1 scores

We're still hunting down a handful of results, but here's the link to Friday's Week 1 football scores.

Rogue California program gets shut down

I mentioned recently that the nation's consensus No. 1 team was left without a game this weekend because the scheduled opponent lost too many players to suspensions after an opening-week brawl.

Well, that short-handed team became a terminated team this week. Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance, Calif., was banned for the remainder of the football season in light of an investigation into the role a booster allegedly played in multiple athletes transferring to and from nearby schools.

Following an investigation by the California Interscholastic Association and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Department of Catholic Schools, Montgomery administrators self-reported additional violations and announced the departure of longtime coach and co-AD Ed Hodgkiss.

Montgomery had 20 incoming football transfers, five of whom were ruled ineligible by the CIF.

According to SFGate.com, the booster in question is an acknowledged gambler who admitted paying parents to get players, with his total outlay while supporting several schools' teams since 2018 possible deep into six figures.

Speaking of crazy football developments out west

Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman's contest vs. Utah top contender Lone Peak ended early in the third quarter on Friday night after an altercation on the Lone Peak sideline resulted in the officials ending the game and awarding Gorman a forfeit.

The Gaels led 35-14 with 9:25 left in the third quarter and were driving. An altercation broke out on the Lone Peak sideline after a long Gorman completion, and several Knights players came off the sideline and onto the field, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

After conferring, the officials awarded Gorman, ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today and No. 3 by MaxPreps, the forfeit based upon a Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association rule that three players leaving the sideline during an incident triggers a forfeit.

Report: DASA complaint uncovers violations by softball coach

The second-winningest softball coach in NYSPHSAA history has been found to have violated the state's Dignity for All Students Act following a district investigation, News 12 in Westchester County reported this week.

Bruce Guyette, who was put on leave from coaching at Minisink Valley late last season, is accused of harassment that an independent investigator determined rose to the level of violating state and district law, the media report said.

The investigation began after a player alleged Guyette touched her backside in unwanted contact on the field earlier this year. According to a News 12 source, that allegation prompted additional complaints across multiple teams, including basketball and softball. The independent report reportedly substantiated more than a dozen DASA violations by Guyette, whose softball resume includes 647 victories.

A district spokesperson said the law prohibits Minisink Valley administrators from discussing any aspect of this investigation. Guyette responded to News 12 by email, saying he "respectfully declines to comment."
