Leading off today: The Chazy boys soccer program reached a milestone on Friday, posting its 1,000th victory with a 10-0 rout of Lake Placid.
Chazy joins Mattituck as the only schools in state history to reach 1,000 wins in boys soccer, according to Sun Community News.
The Eagles, who began playing the sport in 1953, have an all-time record of 1,000-188-61, winning 10 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships along the way. Chazy has also captured 40 sectional titles.
Last month, coach Rob McAuliffe recorded his 550th victory since taking the helm in 1996. He has guided the Eagles to all of their state championships and 24 Section 7 crowns.
NYSED sides with Carle Place senior
Carle Place senior Ryan Leary can resume playing soccer this fall after winning his appeal to the New York State Education Department on Friday,
Newsday reported.
Leary filed a petition on Sept. 25 seeking to overturn the district superintendent's decision that he could not play both football and soccer in the fall, which Leary had previously done as a junior.
"I'm thankful I'll have a chance to compete on the soccer field again,” Leary said. "I missed playing soccer and being around my teammates. After everything that happened, I'm just excited to be back on the field."
Leary practiced with the soccer team on Friday and then went to football practice.
Neither Section 8 nor the NYSPHSAA has a rule that prohibits playing two sports in the same season. Superintendent Ted Cannone told Leary on Aug. 21 that he could play both sports only if he was just the kicker for the football team, citing safety concerns.
The soccer team is 2-6-2 without Leary, who scored 17 goals last season. Newsday reported it was not immediately clear when he could play his first game.
Former Union-Endicott, SU football standout Arthur Jones dies
Retired Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Arthur Jones died Friday at his home in Pompey. He was 39.
Jones played high school football at Union-Endicott and then went on to a stellar career at Syracuse University, setting a school record for interior lineman by making 38.5 tackles for loss. He was a two-time, first-team All-Big East defensive tackle and team captain by his final season for the Orange in 2009.
Jones was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Ravens and played in their Super Bowl 47 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
The Onondaga County 911 Center dispatched fire and ambulance crews to Jones' home following an alert that his defibrillator activated, Syracuse.com reported. Jones, a Rochester native, had a defibrillator for a preexisting heart condition, said Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.
I cannot believe what I just saw
Depew pulled off the touchdown pass of the year on Friday in a 57-6 victory over Albion.
Industry news
The Buffalo News will discontinue printing a Monday newspaper effective Nov. 3. The announcement on Friday said Western New York's dominant publication will continue producing an e-edition, which allows users to flip through the pages as with a physical newspaper, on Mondays.
While it may seem counterproductive to kill off the Monday paper when the Buffalo Bills play nearly all of their games on Sundays, the News' football coverage has the potential to improve. Freed from the early deadlines necessitated by printing the paper in Cleveland, the staff can wait deep into Sunday night or even early Monday morning to present more complete coverage through the e-edition and the website.
