Might as well make it count
If ever there's a good time to register a hole-in-one, it would be with a championship on the line.
Mechanicville junior Matt Salvadore did just that on the 17th hole on Tuesday at Fairways of Halfmoon during the Section 2 Class BCD championship. His 9-iron found the cup from 140 yards. His first career ace propelled Salvadore into a tie with Rowen Seeley of Warrensburg at an even-par 72 for the Class C/D medalist honor.
"My dad was watching, which was great, and my grandfather was there, too," Salvadore tole The Times Union. "One kid (in my group) said, right in the air, 'Looks like it's going in' ... and then it rolled right in."
Multiple issues knock football team off the field
Center Moriches forfeited its football game last weekend due to a combination of injuries, ineligibility decisions, personal reasons, and an outbreak of the contagious Coxsackievirus, school officials,
Newsday reported.
In a letter shared with families, district Superintendent Ricardo Soto said there were no additional cases of the virus beyond a few players stricken before Friday's scheduled game vs. Miller Place.
Soto added that the district conducted extensive cleaning of three buildings over the weekend.
Coxsackievirus, strains of which are sometimes referred to as "hand, foot and mouth disease," spreads through close contact with a person who has the virus; by touching contaminated surfaces; from droplets released by an infected person who is coughing, sneezing or talking; and from fluid from blisters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Head football coach Matt Millheiser said he discovered a potential outbreak of the virus after noticing two players had blisters on their hands shortly before they were scheduled to depart for Friday's game at Miller Place.
Center Moriches' next scheduled game is Saturday against Bayport-Blue Point.
