Friday, May 18, 2007: Troy's Keefe to play basketball for LaSalle
Leading off today: Troy basketball player Jameson Keefe, a 7-foot-2 and 295-pound center, visited LaSalle this week and has committed to the Philadelphia school.

He expects to be redshirted as a freshman and then play for the Atlantic 10 program in the 2008-09 season. Bowling Green, Buffalo and Dartmouth were among the other schools in the running for Keefe, who averaged just under 10 points per game as a senior.

Memorable performance: Chris Schoepe struck out a school-record 21 batters in a complete-game four-hitter as Windham edged South Kortright in 11 innings, 2-1.

Schoepe also tied the game with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly to lift Windham (14-2) to its first Delaware League championship.

This week's question: Survey question No. 7 on our home page is now available for voting. Now that Syracuse CBA has lost a game, we're down to two unbeatens in boys lacrosse and want to know how many will still be standing at the end of the NYSPHSAA tournament.

Results of our previous non-scientific surveys are always available online.

I have to admit I was surprised by the lack of support for moving the three-point line in basketball by a foot. Voters said no by a 29-27 margin. Among those identifying themselves as a coach or administrator, the margin was even greater -- 16-9.

Parents of athletes favored the change by an 8-4 margin, but athletes were evenly split with three votes each way.

Section 5 takes to the air: The Section 5 baseball committee will seed its tournaments on Sunday morning and announce the results on WVIN 98.3 FM in Bath at 11 a.m. The radio show hosts will also post the seedings at www.localsportsedge.com.

Extra points: The Democrat and Chronicle was touting Perry's 80th straight boys tennis victory (a 5-0 decision over Honeoye Falls-Lima on Thursday) as a state record this morning, but I can't find evidence to support it. The 1999 National Federation record book -- sorry, I need to get an updated edition some day -- says Bay Shore clocked 173 in a row from 1965 to 1974.
