Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007: Mathews reported to be returning to Fox Lane from Florida
Leading off today: Mike Mathews, the third-team all-state quarterback in Class A who left Fox Lane for Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas after his junior year, has returned to the Section 1 school.

The Journal News reported Sunday that Foxes coach Bill Broggy had learned that the Mathews family will move back to Bedford and that Mathews will re-enroll at Fox Lane. Broggy said he expects Mathews to be eligible for Friday's season opener at Hendrick Hudson because Mathews had participated in the required number of practices in Florida.

Mathews threw for 1,459 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

Money money: The timing of the story -- ahead of the first week of school -- seemed odd, but Middletown's Times Herald-Record touched on the subject of athletic scholarships over the weekend.

The paper interviewed seven college athletes from the area and summarized their recruiting expierences in brief capsules that formed an important theme: No two athletes and no two schools are exactly alike. The seven went through the recruiting process with varying goals and results.

The story is worth printing and saving if you have a prospective college athlete in the family.

109-game winning streak ends: Cincinnati Elder broke the 109-game winning streak of Charlotte (N.C.) Independence late Saturday with a 41-34 victory in overtime as part of the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium.

Elder scored on its second play of overtime, a 14-yard TD pass from Johnny Groene to Josh Jones. Anthony Miliano's PAT made it 41-34. Elder defensive back Keith

Hamberg ended the game and the nation's longest active football winning streak with an interception on third-and-9 at the Elder 19.

Independence (1-1) had been ranked No. 3 nationally by USA Today and had not lost since Sept. 1, 2000.

Cream of Class A again? A matchup of defending Section 9 football champions proved a mismatch on Saturday as Cornwall routed Red Hook, 47-0, by scoring on its first four possessions.

Cornwall played in the NYSPHSAA Class A final last year, losing to Corning East. The defending-champion Trojans, heavily depleted by graduation, opened Saturday with a 29-7 victory against Owego.

Another projected Class A contender, Aquinas, unimpressively squeezed past McQuaid, 21-20, on Sunday in a battle of fierce Section 5 rivals.

New facility for St. A's: The giant hole on the St. Anthony's campus will be a $41 million student center by the end of next year, featuring a 140,000-square-foot field house for the South Huntington school.

It will be a significant upgrade for the 2,400-student school, which has been a powerhouse in a number of sports including football and track and field. The center will include a 200-meter track, weight room, locker rooms and classroom space for several other extracurricular activities such as band and dance.

Extra points: Newburgh star D.J. Romano, among the 2006 team leaders in TDs, rushing yards, receptions and interceptions despite missing four games with injuries, is likely done for the season after injuring the ACL in his left knee Friday during a loss to Minisink Valley. He'll undergo further examinations this week. . . . Canisius senior Justin Young, playing his first varsity football game, made two scoring catches in a victory over Buffalo Riverside.
