Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007: Boys lacrosse finals awarded to Rochester in 2009
Leading off today: Rochester’s PAETEC Park has been awarded the 2009 boys lacrosse finals by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

The Democrat and Chronicle reported the development this morning. The paper said that no contract has been signed yet but that the lacrosse committee definitely is breaking from its tradition of alternating the finals between Long Island and the Syracuse area. The 2008 finals will be held at Hofstra University.

Despite having more schools than any other region in the NYSPHSAA, Section 5 has hosted relatively few championships in the major sports in recent years. That begins to change somewhat next March when the wrestling tournament comes to Blue Cross Arena.

Milestones: Tamarac beat Lake George, 4-0, on Monday to give coach Craig Gilbert a state-record 441 girls soccer victories. Tamarac is 6-2 this season, Gilbert's 26th on the sideline.

Lehman football coach Carmine Colasanto, 60, collected his 200th win over the weekend with a 24-20 triumph vs. New Utrecht. He's in his 32nd season as head coach at Lehman.

This could be interesting: Former Monsignor Farrell JV basketball coach Dan Melious has applied for the school's vacant varsity position, The Advance reported yesterday.

The job opened when Bob Besignano resigned as coach last week citing "personal and health reasons," the newspaper said.

Monsignor John Paddack, principal of the school, has interviewed Melious, who in July brought a lawsuit against Farrell, the Archdiocese of New York, Paddack and

Besignano after being dismissed as the JV coach. The controversy involved Melious' alleged "improper relationship" with former player Michael Pulci, who has denied any impropriety.

"I have no comment whatsoever," Besignano, dean of students at Farrell, told the newspaper Monday. "I have nothing to do with that process."

The lawsuit remains pending and Melious continues to teach at Farrell.

"I coached all of those kids and I feel like all of those kids are already behind the eight-ball, between not having summer workouts and everything going on," he said. "I don't coach for Monsignor. I don't coach for Mr. Baldassano. I just do it because I like to do it."

Upgrade at Poly Prep: The $4.5 million upgrade of the track and athletic fields at Poly Prep in Bay Ridge has been completed.

The school installed Mondo's Mondoturf Ecofill, a rubber substitute. The company claims the material retains about 20 degrees less heat than black rubber, lowering athletes' fatigue. Mondo also installed an eight-lne track similar to what will be used in the Beijing Olympics next summer.

Extra points: The 43rd McQuaid Cross Country Invitational is Saturday at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. Conditions are shaping up to be warm (high of 69) and dry for the 208 schools scheduled to compete in 24 races. . . Ashley Wilson of Ravena has nine goals in her last two soccer games, including four in a 5-5 tie Monday with Holy Names. . . . We've changed the poll questions on the home page.
