Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007: Burnt Hills upsets Lansingburgh, 35-22
Leading off today: Another week, another No. 1 bites the dust in football. NYSSWA Class A leader Lansingburgh tumbled last night one week after St. Anthony's fell from the top spot in Class AA and two weeks after Tuckahoe got tagged in Class D.

Junior QB Paul Layton ran for 194 yards and two TDs, threw for 109 yards and two more scores and kicked all five extra points as Burnt Hills (4-1) beat Lansingburgh, 35-22. Layton ran 75 yards from scimmage on the game's second play as the Spartans took the lead for good.

At least two other ranked "A" teams went down. Senior Ron Majerus ran for 233 yards and four touchdowns as Mexico beat No. 5 East Syracuse-Minoa, 28-14.

Grand Island topped No. 13 Albion, 33-27. Alex Neutz made seven catches for 132 yards and TDs, including the winner in the third quarter to break a 27-27 halftime tie.

More highlights: Hornell's David Zapata ran for 302 yards on 32 carries in a 43-3 rout of Honeoye Falls-Lima to become the Section 5 career rushing leader.

The 5-foot-7 senior has 5,566 yards to move past Churchville-Chili's graduate Kevin Collier (5,402), who plays for the University of Pittsburgh.

Zapata ran for 2,236 yards as a sophomore and 2,106 yards as a junior.

  • In Class C action, QB Trevor Saunders of No. 1 Dobbs Ferry celebrated his birthday by carrying eight times for 201 yards and four scores in a 47-0 rout of No. 14 Albertus Magnus.
  • Lansing, 10th in Class C, waited out an hour-long weather delay to beat Elmira Notre Dame, 41-13, and set up a showdown with No. 10 Unatego next week. Senior QB Vince Redmond went 6-for-7 for 108 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for two TDs.
  • Jon Erik Banach ran 37 times for a school-record 304 yards as West Seneca West beat Jamestown, 32-21. Banach scored five TDs.
  • The extent of Utica Proctor star receiver Deandre Preaster's knee injury is not yet known. Preaster, QB Kelly Olney (shoulder) and running back Steven Brown (arm) were all injured last night in a 28-13 loss to Liverpool.
Landesberg to UVa: Sylven Landesberg, a 6-foot-6 guard for Holy Cross in Queens, will continue his basketball career at the University of Virginia.

Landesberg, who averaged 25.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists, as a second-team all-state junior, was also considering Georgia Tech and St. John's.

Landesberg will most likely play the point at Virginia but has the shooting touch to play on the wing.

Romeo saga comes to an end for now: The Canandaigua Board of Education accepted Rich Romeo's resignation as wrestling coach less than two weeks after he had been re-appointed in a controversial decision.

Romeo will remain a middle-school teacher in the phys ed department. He cited personal reasons for the decision to step down.

In January, police charged Romeo after two families said their children had been mistreated. Romeo pleaded guilty to

disorderly conduct in Canandaigua City Court in February.

Romeo had rolled up 200 victories since taking over in 1993.

Throw-ins: Schalmont senior Jessica Strang scored all of her team's goals in a 6-2 soccer victory over Ravena. Strang now stands at 98 career goals.

Third-year Utica Notre Dame girls soccer coach John Del Buono resigned this week, citing the demands of his insurance business. AD John DePerno has taken over the 9-1-1 team, assisted by Dominica Reina Paladino. ND beat New Hartford on Thursday, 3-1.

MRSA hits Section 3: MRSA, a form of a staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics, has been making the rounds in at least one Central New York school.

It was first reported Sept. 7 by a Syracuse Henninger football player, followed a week later by a teammate. It appears on the skin as a red bump comparable to a spider bite.

"The most common way it's transmitted is person-to-person," said Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County Health Commissioner. "So, someone has a wound, they have skin contact with someone else."

Henninger officials sanitized the school's athletic facilities, including the football field.

Stowin' Somoans? A California assistant football coach is accused of illegally recruiting more than a dozen players from American Samoa and offering them housing.

The six-month probe alleges a Samoa-based relative of the coach began meeting with the students' parents in 2004, and persuaded them to send their sons from the remote South Pacific island to Lodi. The coach is accused of housing the students at his home, with his brother or with other coaches.

Fourteen students and their families flew in with plane tickets purchased by the coach's mother, and were put up briefly in Stockton-area motels paid for by Franklin High School personnel, authorities said. The coaches helped forge utility bills to establish residency.

Extra points: The Observer-Dispatch reported yesterday that running backs Wayne Towne (Rome Free Academy) and Eric Morrissette (Westmoreland) will be sidelined for the remainder of the season by knee injuries. Towne ran for 1,333 yards and scored 16 touchdowns last season. He was up to 400 yards and 5 TDs this fall before getting hurt late in the Auburn game last weekend. Morrissette tore a ligament and is awaiting surgery. He had rushed for 218 yards and four touchdowns this fall. . . . Injury-ravaged Pulaski (0-4) forfeited its football game at Thousand Islands (4-0) this weekend. It was supposed to be the homecoming game for TI, 16th in the state in Class C.

Kenmore West soph swimmer Marissa Dressel continues to break more records than a bulldozer at an anti-Sinead O'Connor protest rally. Dressel clocked 2:08.82 in the 200 IM yesterday for a Grand Island pool record. The Buffalo News says the three-time state meet participant has also broken marks at Niagara Falls, Clarence, Kenmore East and, of course, Kenmore West this month.
