Friday, Oct. 19, 2007: Buffalo City Honors extends amazing girls volleyball streak
Leading off today: We have our winner in the contest for most amazing streak statistic of the year.

Buffalo City Honors won a showdown of undefeated girls volleyball teams Thursday, sweeping three games from Hutch Tech. In doing so, the Centaurs wrapped up their 22nd consecutive Buffalo Public Schools crown and -- here comes the amazing part -- extended their streak of games won within the league to 739.

   On the subject of streaks:

  • Byron-Bergen's girls volleyball run ended at 74 consecutive wins with Tuesday's five-game loss to Nazareth. The Bees are three-time defending state champions.
  • Le Roy takes a 48-game home winning streak into tonight's Section 5 football quarterfinal against Alexander.
'Superbug' education: Alarmed by the spread of a potentially deadly staph infection, Long Island officials are warning athletes of the need to take personal hygiene very seriously.

Newsday reports Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria was a hot topic Wednesday at a Section 11 workshop in Wading River attended by nearly 200 Suffolk County ADs, coaches and others.

The session was especially timely because practice for wrestling starts soon and youth hockey leagues are already gearing up. Close body contact in wrestling and the amount of hard-to-keep-sanitary equipment in hockey are concerns.

The Newsday story goes quite in-depth and includes a highly useful Q&A that coaches and administrators might want to keep handy.

'Football numbers: The New York State Public High School Athletic Association's Championship Advisory Committee convenes today to consider changing the classification cutoffs for the football playoffs in 2008.

The recommendation most directly affects classes AA, C and D. The AA/A cutoff would move from 1,001 to 1,051, B/C from 401 to 440 and C/D from 276 to 281. If approved, the proposal goes to the state's Executive Committee later this month.

Sad news to pass along: There were two more notable deaths reported this week.

Howie Frajberg, boys basketball coach at Valley Stream North the last three seasons, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 51.

Frajberg spent more than 25 years coaching, including 1996-2002 at Maritime College. He was also the coach and AD at Concordia College in White Plains and an assistant at Dominican College.

Tennis advocate Stewart P. Stearns Jr. died last Friday of complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 76.

Stearns was a pioneer of the sport in Section 2. He coached at South Glens Falls and Queensbury, served as a sectional and state tennis chairman, worked as a pro and was the tennis director of the Queensbury

Racquet Club.

"He taught you that you were never bigger than the game, and that element was always there in his teams," Saratoga Springs girls coach Rich Johns told The Post-Star. "He was a very quiet gentleman, but he could be very stern, too, if you ever crossed the line on respect. But he was always encouraging."

Quickly: A few brief thoughts regarding topics in the news this week:

   (1) It's nice to see University at Buffalo coach Turner Gill's name making the "long" list as a candidate to replace embattled Bill Callahan at Nebraska, but such a quick move into big-time football isn't going to happen for the former Cornhuskers great. Gill is making progress at UB, but let's not get too giddy about a 3-4 record, because the Bulls are still candidates to lose by two TDs to an awful Syracuse team.

Gill's turn will come, but Nebraska's safe choice if Callahan gets sacked is LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.

   (2) Gannett bought HighSchoolSports.net this week for an undisclosed sum. It's not a spectacular site, but it reportedly has coaches or ADs from 6,500 U.S. schools supplying schedules and scores and does have some potential if management puts some careful thought into building out what already exists.

It's the latest of several recent moves in the industry. Over the summer, Active Network bought LaxPower.com on the heels of Yahoo's $100 million acquisition of Rivals.com. Sports Illustrated increased its stake in takkle.com earlier this summer, and CBS bought Maxpreps.com outright.

Additionally, Hearst-Argyle Television launched "High School Playbook" -- think of it as Facebook meets ESPN -- for its TV stations and plans to license it to other markets by next year. Fox-owned stations developed their own "FoxHilites" initiative earlier this year.

In case anyone's interested, bidding on NewYorkSportswriters.org starts at $750,000. Or lifwtime season tickets to New York Giants games. Whatever.

   (3) James Allen of The Times-Union in Albany wrote about the Lansingburgh eligibility case this morning and rightfully wondered why it took more than a week to get the situation resolved.

His most important observation, however, was in the third-from last paragraph:

"The source of the complaint against Lansingburgh obviously brought this up so late in the season as a way to hurt Nyquan McGirt and the rest of the Knights," he wrote.

   Bingo.

Extra points: TullyRunners.com pulled out its chainsaw and whacked results from the Manhattan Invitaional from its speed ratings database. TullyRunners cited numerous reports of inaccurate results, which has been a chronic problem in recent years. That meet is simply too large for its own good. . . . The bloodletting has begun in Hoover, Ala., where the school board accepted the resignation of assistant principal Carol Martin, who was named in an investigation for her role in grade changes of star football players.
