Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007: Greece Arcadia knocks Aquinas out of girls soccer playoffs
Leading off today: With all that took place yesterday around New York, we're not even going to pretend to be comprehensive in this installment of the blog. Instead, here's a summary of some of the more intriguing, surprising and impressive developments from Saturday.

I've supplied links to fuller details on many of these items if you have the urge to dig deeper.

Girls soccer: Greece Arcadia knocked off defending state champion Aquinas in penalty kicks, 4-2, after the teams played to a 1-1 regulation tie in the Section 5 Class AA final. Sophomore Kristen Powers converted the decisive PK. The Titans will play Spencerport on Tuesday for the right to advance to the state quarterfinals.

Burnt Hills (8-10-2), which endured a six-game losing streak during the season and lost two seniors to early-season knee injuries, beat Scotia by a 2-0 margin on Friday to win Section 2 Class A for the 22nd time in 25 seasons.

Carly Beyar scored with 3:43 left in the first half for No. 1 Rockville Centre South Side beat New Hyde Park, 1-0, in a Section 8 Class A semfinal. South Side (17-0) will play No. 15 Garden City in the final on Tuesday.

Boys soccer: Williamsville North, ranked No. 1 in the state, won Section 6 Class AA by edging Clarence, 2-1, on the strength of goals by Sean Durfee and Andre Marinaccio 1:05 apart early in the second half.

Nick Gregg scored his second goal of the game with 1:00 to go as Owego edged No. 12 Elmira Free Academy, 2-1, for the Section 4 Class A crown. It's the fourth Section 4 title for the Indians since 2002, when they won the NYSPHSAA Class B title.

Unheralded Iroquois knocked off No. 4 Williamsville East, 2-0, in Section 6 Class A action as Peter Wilson scored twice.

Top-ranked Galway (21-0) remained perfect by capturing Section 2 Class C with a 1-0 victory over Schenectady Christian. Senior defender Vincent LaTerra cashed in a corner kick early in the second half.

Sharon Springs (9-9-2), which struggled most of the Section 2 Class D season without Ryan Brown (out 14 games with a concussion) got two goals from its star forward and beat No. 11 North Warren, 3-0.

Football: Kaheem Gist recorded five more touchdowns as No. 15 Canandaigua scored a 38-21 win over No. 10 Rush-Henrietta in the Section 5 qualifier for a state Class AA quarterfinal berth. Gist, who is 221 yards away from breaking the section's single-season rushing record of 2,394 by Webster's Carl Garritano in 2002, has gained 979 yards and scored 17 TDs in three post-season wins.

West Genesee avenged an earlier loss to No. 19 Cicero-North Syracuse, 23-21, on a 20-yard field goal by senior Luke Cometti with :01 to play in the Section 3 Class AA final. The No. 23 Wildcats will make their first trip to the state tournament.

No. 1 Monroe-Woodbury survived a scare and booted No. 8 Minisink Valley from the AA playoffs in the Section 9 final, 35-28. The Crusaders broke a 28-28 tie on a 2-yard yard TD run by Karl Ehlers on the first play of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Danny Scalo carried 16 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns. He was 6-for-7 through the air for 101 yards.

Defending state Class A champion Corning East still has a pulse, having fought off Maine-Endwell (310 rushing yards), 26-24. However, QB Matt Pierotti (ankle) and defensive stalwart Patrick Granger (neck) left with injuries.

Granger was taken away on a stretcher as a precaution.

No. 14 Lansingburgh twice rallied from behind in the fourth quarter and Matt Harte intercepted a pass in the end zone as time expired in a 28-25 victory over No. 9 Burnt Hills in Section 2 Class A. Senior Kenny Youngs scored the winning TD on an 8-yard touchdown run with :49.8 remaining.

In Class B, No. 6 Peru earned a 20-17 win over Beekmantown in overtime. Alec Currier reeled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Hoey for the victory.

No. 3 Cazenovia followed up a "punt-rooski" with Chris Nourse's fifth touchdown of the game and beat No. 4 Westhill, 44-34. Nourse ran for 281 yards on 34 carries to offset 227 yards on the ground by Dale Ross.

No. 5 Mount Markham raced to a 20-0 lead only to fall to Syracuse Bishop Ludden in Class C, 41-30. The Gaelic Knights scored on four of their first five second-half possessions to clinch their ninth straight win.

No. 1 Dobbs Ferry dominated No. 11 Bronxville in Section 1 Class C, 56-19. The Eagles outgained Bronxville, 559-115, as Frank Scattaretico rushed 14 times for 175 yards.

No. 2 Walton crushed Deposit, 52-0, as senior fullback Richard Fletcher piled up big numbers: 154 rushing yards and five TDs on the ground, a TD reception and a two-point conversion. The Warriors have defeated their last eight opponents by a combined 441-0 margin. Next up: A state Class D quarterfinal against No. 1 Onondaga on Friday.

No. 13 Fort Edward avenged a regular-season loss and beat No. 4 Canajoharie, 30-13, in Section 2 Class D action as 5-foot-8 Tony Breeyear ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns, and QB Damian Tyler ran for 121 yards.

In the Section 11 playoff opener, Longwood — ranked 18th in Class AA — barely escaped Walt Whitman, 20-17. Mike Parrish broke a 20-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter for the decisive points.

Senior Joe Sidaras was 11-for-13 for 202 yards and four touchdowns as No. 2 William Floyd crushed Sachem East, 57-0 for its 30th straight win.

In Section 8, No. 7 Farmingdale beat Plainview JFK, 35-7 as TaShawn Arthur carried 14 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns and had 10 tackles.

Plainedge beat Sewanhaka, 24-14, as senior John Makatschian rushed for 210 yards and three first-half TDs. Makatschian (2,815) broke the school record for career rushing yards with, ahead of Eddie Sweet's mark of 2,745 set in 1989.

In non-playoff action, Scarsdale outlasted Clarkstown North 61-56 to overcome Greg Schuster's 382 yards and a Section 1 record-tying seven touchdowns. Schuster carried 25 times and fell short of the sectional mark of 403 yards by by Sleepy Hollow's Harold Gayden in 1981.

Extra points: Eden had its 107-match league winning streak in boys volleyball snapped by Maryvale last month, but the Eagles got revenge yesterday with a sweep in the Section 6 Class B semifinals. . . . In girls volleyball. Ardsley rallied from down 2-1 in games an 23-16 in the fourth to beat Pelham, 25-16, 22-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-17, and repeat as Section 1 Class B champ. . . . Pittsford Mendon swept the Class A team titles at the Section 5 team championships in Rushville. Freshman Shaylyn Tuite broke away with half a mile to repeat as girls champion in 19:38. Perennial power Honeoye Falls-Lima swept the Class B team titles and sophomore Alex Deir took the top spot among boys in 16:29.6.
