Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007: Sachem North junior rolls pair of perfect games in same series
Leading off today: Sachem North junior bowler Joey Novara rolled two 300 games and finished with an 823 series in a sweep of Hauppauge yesterday at Sayville Lanes.

Novara rolled a 223 game between his two perfect scores. He rolled a 290 game and 813 series a week earlier.

Soccer honors: Six New York boys have been named All-Americans by adidas and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Goalie Alex Aurrichio (Half Hollow Hills West), defender David Neumann (Arlington), midfielder Matt Kristek (Vestal), midfielder David MacVane (Saratoga Springs), forward Will Ogden (Byram Hills) and forward Matt Schuber (Webster Thomas) made the list of 80 players from across the country. All are seniors.

The players are invited to the NSCAA All-America Luncheon Jan. 19 as part of the organization's annual convention in Baltimore, Md.

  • We posted the NSCAA all-New York team this morning. It serves as the New York State Sportswriters Association's all-state team as well.

For a good cause: The Timon-St. Jude vs. Clarence game was more than just a Western New York hockey matchup last night. It was a very successful charity event, with an estimated 500 teddy bears collected for distribution to children this month.

In keeping with a tradition found at some colleges and minor-league teams, fans were encouraged to throw the bears onto the ice after their team's first goal.

Timon-St. Jude won the game, 10-2.

"Winning the game was great but it’s secondary," Coach Pat Fisher told The Buffalo News. "Just to look back on a night like this, it’s great to say it was such a success and I’d like to thank the Clarence coaching staff, team and their fans. They were a part of it as well."

Liverpool turf 'unsafe': Liverpool's school board declared its artificial turf unusable and will reschedule games scheduled for the stadium field for at least the next year, The Post-Standard reported.

Superintendent Jan Matousek said the decade-old field is unsafe because of problems below the playing surface.

  •
Some practices and phys ed classes will be held there once a safe area can be marked off.

District architects raised concerns in September, and the board decided to seek a second opinion. Fall-season contests were held there as scheduled.

New on the site: I've finally started to build out the video links page on the site, mostly with items found recently during a brief visit to YouTube.com.

If you only have time to watch one clip, I don't know anyone who can get enough of the Plano East-John Tyler game from the 1994 Texas football playoffs.

We'll change up the featured clip on the home page under the "Memorable Videos" label every month or so as we come across good new content.

If you want to suggest a clip for the page — remember that we're looking for the unusual or for well-known names from the past rather than run-of-the-mill game highlights from the camcorder or local TV station — e-mail me at the address beneath this blog.

Influential reporter dies: Joe Smith, founder of the Women's Basketball News Service and a man frequently found at the NYSPHSAA and Federation tourneys, died last Tuesday at the age of 65. Smith was one of the pioneers when it came to serious reporting and analysis of women's basketball and an advocate of women's sports in general.

Famously, he was sued for defamation after his preview capsule of the University of Kansas in 1993: "The Jayhawks are loaded with talent. . . . But coach Marian Washington usually finds a way to screw things up. This season will be no different," he wrote.

Smith won a summary judgment in district court, which noted Washington was 0-for-22 in attempting to direct Kansas to a Final Four.

Extra points: Gilbertsville-Mount Upton district voters will decide tomorrow on a proposed $8.5 million capital project that includes the addition of playing fields and construction of an all-weather track. . . . Mechanicville voters will decide on two propositions on Dec. 20. A $1.5 million plan would pay for renovation work on the pool (the school does not have a swim team) and add lighting to the main athletic field. The 25-yard pool was shut down last school year to save money and was reopened in July.
