Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008: Shen's Meys likely to set national record for pins today
Leading off today: Shenendehowa senior wrestler Hunter Meys will probably break the national high school record for career pins today at Shen's tournament according to The Times Union.

Meys' next pin will give him 189 in his career to surpass Steve Mocco of Blair Academy (N.J.) who graduated in 2001 and went on to win NCAA titles for Iowa in 2003 and Oklahoma State in 2005.

He has pinned 35 consecutive opponents, including all four at the 2007 NYSPHSAA championships. He's 14-for-14 this season in the 189-pound class.

Meys, who will attend Boston University, was presented the Junior Schalles Award last spring, a national honor in recognition of being regarded the best scholastic pinner. Meys is one of four members of his family to earn state wrestling crowns. His brother Austin won in 2005 at 96 pounds, and their father and grandfather also won state titles.

Binghamton skater scores six: Mitch Rozen scored six goals, including the game-tying goal with 5:47 to go as Binghamton earned an 8-8 tie with Chenango Valley at Broome Community College last night.

Rozen's final goal came 17 seconds after Jordan Ashman (three goals) scored to give Chenango Valley (9-2-4) an 8-7 lead. Binghamton rallied from a 7-4 deficit.

More hockey: It's safe to say we're all used to seeing girls participate on boys hockey teams in New York. I saw Gina Lawrence play for Brockport almost 25 years ago, and there's been a steady stream of female players in Section 5

and across the state since.

But Newburgh Free Academy has a slightly different twist this season with two girls on the roster. Junior defenseman Julie Horn gets two or three shifts per period and senior forward Brittany Carey is on the ice a bit less.

"I've (played against girls before), I see no difference," Monroe-Woodbury coach Paul Bacsardi told The Times Herald-Record. "You can't tell with the helmet and a lot of guys have long hair. If any player is good enough to make the team, they should play. I'd actually love to see some high school girls' leagues around here, like they do upstate. But we don't have the ice time or the participation numbers."

Random thought: I received a couple of e-mails recently from people upset with the amount of attention that some of the major sports — football and basketball, for instance — get relative to other sports. The complaints were unrelated and not aimed at anyone in particular (media, ADs and administrators, etc.), but instead just vented in general.

My advice is to keep things in perspective, as I was reminded while scouring the Section 2 web site recently. Football and basketball go a long way toward subsidizing many other sports.

In Section 2 last year, the profit turned in my the football committee more than made up for the net losses posted by field hockey, softball, swimming, bowling, golf, indoor track, skiing and cross country. And the combined boys and girls basketball revenue offset all of the section's administrative expenses (including trophies) not covered by various other reimbusements.

The picture is similar across much of the state.
