Friday, Jan. 11, 2008: Basketball star Stephenson suspended from school for five days
Leading off today: Defending PSAL champion Brooklyn Abraham Lincoln rolled past Jefferson in boys basketball last night, 76-52, minus acclaimed swingman Lance Stephenson, who was hit with a five-day school suspension.

Stephenson got into an altercation Wednesday with teammate Devon McMillan at school, during which a piece of glass was shattered and cut both students. Stephenson is also expected to miss the fourth-ranked Railsplitters' games at Norcom, Va., tomorrow and at South Shore on Tuesday.

"I'm really disappointed in myself," Stephenson told The New York Daily News. "I'm not happy this happened, but it was a good lesson that it happened. Now I know not to do it again. College coaches think I'm a hothead now. I'm really disappointed about that."

Stephenson said he and McMillan were "pushing" each other and "horseplaying" when the glass shattered. Both players are OK and have since apologized to each other.

Inaugural award winners: Senior Pat Dupont of Fairport and sophomore Emily Lipari of Rosyln have been selected as the Gatorade New York Cross Country Runners of the Year. Both are now eligible for the national award. This is the first year that Gatorade has included cross country as part of its awards program.

Livonia coach accused: A modified football and softball coach at Livonia High alleged to have had inappropriate communications with female athletes has been arrested, according to Livingston County deputies.

Jeremy J. Socola, 26, was charged with first- and second-degree disseminating indecent material to minors, both felonies, deputies told the Democrat and Chronicle. Socola was arraigned in Geneseo Town Court and was remanded to the Livingston County Jail in lieu of $7,500 cash bail or $12,000 bond.

Deputies said Socola, who does not teach in the district, allegedly engaged in explicit sexual communications with the girls through text messaging, picture messaging and instant messaging.

Livonia Superintendent Scott Bischoping said district officials on Tuesday contacted the sheriff’s office, which initiated the investigation after a student told a school principal about the alleged activity.

Streaking: The blog item earlier this week regarding the end of Brandon (Fla.) High's 459-match wrestling winning streak has generated some e-mails about the Miller Place badminton program.

NYSSWA member Jason Molinet covered the story for Newsday when Miller Place finally lost on April 12, 2005, after 504 consecutive co-ed wins over 32 seasons. The streak ended at the hands of Smithtown, 10-5, but seemingly should be recognized as the national record for a high school sport.

The problem is that few schools offer the sport. There were only U.S. 218 boys teams and 424 girls teams (mostly in California), accounting for 14,961 athletes, playing badminton in the 2006-07 school year according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. The National Federation record book does not track marks in badminton or several other more popular sports such as bowling, water polo and weightlifting.

According to Molinet, Miller Place broke the old mark of 292 straight wins, held by the Amherst Sweet Home girls volleyball, on April 7, 1992.

Extra points: Whitesboro, ranked third in Division 2 by the NYSSWA, scored three third-period goals and defeated No. 6 Rome Free Academy in boys hockey yesterday. . . . No. 3 Batavia Notre Dame is at No. 2 Prattsburgh tomorrow in a big boys Class D basketball game. Fighting Irish Coach Mike Rapone will be seeking career win No. 500.
