Friday, Jan. 18, 2007: Stuyvesant coach released from hospital, could be disciplined
Leading off today: The Stuyvesant High coach driving a van that crashed in Vermont en route to a meet at Dartmouth could be fired for taking students on the trip without telling their principals, The New York Post reported.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said he is awaiting an investigation of Coach Erin Taylor, 29, by Commissioner of Special Investigations Dick Condon. Taylor, who was released from a Lebanon, N.H., hospital Wednesday with broken vertebrae, could be fired, fined or have a letter put in her personnel file if she is found to have violated Education Department rules, the paper reported.

She was driving eight athletes when the rented van swerved into a median on I-91 and rolled over, ejecting some students and trapping others.

Department spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said school principals were unaware of the trip beforehand. Chancellor's Regulation A-670 states, "All school trips must be approved in advance by the principal."

Junior Lucia Hsiao, who suffered a fractured neck bone, was released from a hospital yesterday, wearing a halo screwed into her forehead to immobilize her head. Teammate Valerie Piro remains hospitalized with paralysis below the waist.

Wrestling changes on hold: Last week's meeting to discuss possible changes to the qualifying procedure for the NYSPHSAA wrestling championhsips resulted in a decision to hold off on a vote until more feedback to the draft proposal can be gathered.

The plan calls for elimination of the current wild-card berths in favor of regional qualifiers the week before the state championships. Committee members have already suggested changes to te qualifying meet that would require reassigning some sections to different regions and possibly increasing the size of some fields.

Should the new format get all of the needed approvals

it would not go into effect before 2010. The NYSPHSAA's wrestling committee will discuss the plan again in April.

Zapata picks Navy: Record-setting Hornell running back David Zapata said this week he plans to attend the United States Naval Academy.

Zapata ran for 1,691 yards as a senior and finished his career as Section 5's leader in yards (6,101), touchdowns (81) and points (507).

I have no problem serving in the military,” Zapata told The Hornell Tribune. "I'm from this country so I have no problem serving for it, or dying for it, if that's what I'm called to do."

Examing perfect games: I'll let the lead speak for itself, because Newsday scored a pocket hit this week:

"Rolling a perfect game in boys bowling used to be something special. It did not happen very often. That has changed this season with seven 300 games already on the books. Is it an aberration or is perfection becoming easier to obtain?"

I'll save you the time, though I do suggest you read the whole story. The majority of "perfect" games are dubious or something close to it. It's mostly about lane conditions and the way some operators manipulate dressings and surface treatments to turn every roll of the ball into a potential pocket hit.

Extra points: Grover Cleveland (12-0) and Niagara Falls (9-1) have a huge Section 6 basketball battle set for Monday to cap a Martin Luther King Jr. Classic quadrupleheader at Hutch-Tech. . . . Newark girls basketball Coach Diane Kirnie picked up victory No. 300 last weekend. . . . Bishop Kearney and Aquinas will add junior high classrooms to their schools next fall following today's announcement that the Rochester Diocese is closing 13 elementary schools in June. McQuaid and Mercy already have junior highs in their buildings.
