Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008: LaSalle basketball coach resigns after 6-8 start
Leading off today: Fourth-year boys basketball Coach Sean Brown has resigned at Troy's LaSalle Institute after a 6-8 start to the season, The Times Union reported.

Principal Robert Herzog said Brown did nothing improper as coach but indicated a growing number of "disgruntled parents" complained about his job performance -- including game management and usage of players.

Brown had a 37-42 career record. He confirmed that he was offered the choice to stay through the end of the season but declined.

The interim coach is Mike Beadnell, who moved from the JVs.

Several area coaches rallied around Brown.

"I'm disgusted," Averill Park Coach Dave Pugliese told the paper. "I think coaching is about making the kids better people, not about winning percentages. I want my kids to get better and I definitely want to win. There is much more involved with coaching than wins and losses at the high school level."

"That is lousy, especially in the middle of the year," said Mechanicville's Joe Loudis. "This isn't pro sports. What is high school sports coming to? That is terrible."

Fairport girls roll: Senior guard Brittany Wilson threw down a career-high eight three-pointers, scored 35 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Fairport (14-1) to a 64-50 win over the two-time defending state Class AA champion Rush-Henrietta (13-3) last night.

Wilson connected for four three-pointers and 14 points in the third quarter to turn a 28-24 deficit into a 42-36 lead.

Bad, bad coach: A Pittsburgh high school coach accused of biting a wrestler in the leg has agreed to resign rather than face possible criminal charges, police said.

Mike Marshall bit the Central Cambria High wrestler at

practice on Jan. 21, Cambria Township police Officer James McGough said.

"The coach was wrestling with him and bit him in the leg, the upper thigh," McGough said.

The bite caused bruising, but did not draw blood, McGough said. The student offered to drop the matter if Marshall agreed to resign, police said.

Marshall, 36, declined to confirm that he bit the wrestler. He said he has not "technically" submitted a resignation and referred questions about his status to his lawyer.

Behind closed doors: Students will be banned from tomorrow afternoon's boys basketball game between Brewster and host Horace Greeley.

The one-time ban applies to students from both schools and is in response to rowdy behavior by Greeley students this season, though AD Steve Young said no Greeley students were suspended from school as a result of any incidents.

"Certain types of behavior are unacceptable," Young told The Journal News. "We want to let them know the severity of the situation."

A letter on Greeley's sports boosters Web site cited students' conduct during and after Greeley's Jan. 18 game at Byram Hills. The letter said events at that game "escalated to the point that student safety became a genuine concern. During the game, many of our students chanted profanities at the opposing players and showed little regard for the adults who asked them to stop. Their poor sportsmanship was also directed at the officials."

Extra points: Mike Ford, a track standout at Rochester's East High in the late 1980s and now an assistant at Baylor, will coach defending Olympic 400-meter champion Jeremy Wariner as he prepares for the Beijing Games. Wariner split with Clyde Hart, Baylor's legendary head coach, in a contract dispute over money this month.
