Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008: West Genesee loses, Queensbury squeaks by in hockey
Leading off today: Andrew Lazzaro's snapped a 1-1 tie with 3:56 left in the third period yesterday and lifted Oswego to a 3-1 upset of West Genesee, top-reanked in the state in Division 1 ice hockey.

Eric Cooper added an empty-net goal for the Buccaneers (7-5-1, 9-10-2). The loss snapped West Genesees 17-game unbeaten streak. The Wildcats are 18-2-2.

In Division 2, top-ranked Queensbury escaped with a 6-5 victory over Guilderland in overtime in Schenectady.

Kevin Corbett's goal 2:29 into OT decided it as the Spartans (17-2-2) overcame 13 pernalties to 11 for Guilderland, which was called for 11 penalties. Collin Burg's power-play goal with 16.8 seconds remaining in the third period tied the score for Guilderland.

More Saturday results: Shenendehowa (20-0-1) rolled to the Section 2 dual-meet wrestling championship with a 55-26 pummeling of Amsterdam in the final at Colonie.

Brothers Austin (189 pounds) and Hunter Meys (215) opened the finals with pins, and Adam Gelata followed with a pin at 275. By the time T. J. Popolizio pinned at 119, the score was 39-0.

The Plainsmen blitzed their way into the final by beating LaSalle, 65-15, Whitehall, 53-19, and Duanesburg, 54-22.

Merber wins Millrose Mile: Half Hollow Hills West senior Kyle Merber scored big on Friday as he captured the boys mile in 4:13.86 at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden. Bobby Andrews of Manalapan (N.J.) was second in 4:14.60 and former Garden City runner Charles White, who now attends Cherry Creek (Colo.), was third in 4:15.01.

The girls race went to Jillian Smith of New Jersey's Southern Regional High in 4:50.87. Roslyn's Emily Lipari started slowly and placed seventh in 5:03.7.

More Friday results: UConn-bound Rice guard Kemba Walker scored a career-high 39 points as the Raiders beat St. Raymond's in CHSAA action, 87-80. His previous high had been 29 points.

Dorell Carter and Durand Scott each had 16 for Rice. Darryl Bryant led St. Raymond's with 27 points and Omari Lawrence tallied 22.

Nice gesture: Jordann Myers, a Geneva senior hobbled by a torn knee ligament that will require surgery this week, scored the game's first basket in the Panthers' 67-35 loss

to Canandaigua thanks to an assist from the coaches.

Geneva coach Steve Muzzi got Canandaigua's Bob Guy to agree to let Myers score the uncontested layup, followed by a quick timeout to get her off the court for the final time in her career.

More on Buffalo situation: Suspended Buffalo McKinley basketball player Jayvonna Kincannon, 17, can return to school tomorrow after serving five weeks of a seven-week suspension — if she writes a letter of apology to Principal Crystal Barton.

Kincannon and her grandmother told The Buffalo News they agreed to those terms Saturday, even though the lengthy suspension appears to have violated state education law. The sudden change of heart by the district follows a week of heat from the newspaper and public outrage directed at the high school and district administrations.

"It wasn’t the goodness of their hearts that welcomed Jayvonna back," said Marcia Jones, Kincannon's grandmother and guardian. "It was the goodness of the newspaper. The truth is coming out."

Kincannon, who is a captain on the basketball and soccer teams, landed in trouble with Barton on Dec. 11 when she and four other girls on the basketball team used a cell phone while in school to get into the Board of Education’s agenda so they could express support for fired volunteer assistant coach Michelle Stiles.

"I feel like I was singled out because I’m the most outspoken one on the team. They think, 'If we get rid of her, nobody will talk about the situation [regarding coach Stiles] anymore,'" Kinkannon said.

Extra points: Orchard Park junior Jeff Tundo, coming off a huge footabll season, has made an oral commitment to Ohio State — for lacrosse. . . . Amherst Sweet Home diver Alex Pason suffered a mild concussion Friday in a swimming loss to Orchard Park. Pason was attempting an inward dive when his face struck the board. . . . The Holy Angels girls basketball team will play its first game in its new, $ 2.2 million Athletic and Performance Center on Monday against Nardin. . . . Richard Ali, former biology teacher and soccer coach at Cathedral High School in Manhattan was sentenced on Friday to 1½ to 4½ years in state prison for sexually abusing five of his former students. He pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree rape, two counts of third-degree rape and two counts of third-degree sexual abuse before Queens Supreme Court Justice James P. Griffin, who told Ali that he was a “parent’s worst nightmare.”
