Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008: Lincoln knocks off Rice at Prime Time Shootout
Leading off today: Junior Lance Stephenson scored 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Abraham Lincoln in a 75-68 win over Rice last night in the Prime Time Shootout at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J.

Lincoln is ranked first and Rice second in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association. The game was a rematch of the 2007 Federation final, also won by Lincoln.

By the way, The New York Daily News reported that Rice's Kemba Walker has been invited to play in the McDonald's All-American game in Milwaukee on March 26. Walker will attend UConn in the fall. That could get interesting since the Federation finals begin two days later.

South Jeff girls prevail: South Jefferson, ranked No. 2 in Class B, avenged its only loss of the season by downing Indian River, No. 3 in Class A, 78-72 in triple overtime as Linsey Niles scored 28 points.

The loss ended the Warriors' 19-game winning streak.

Rachael Bassett (17 points) of South Jefferson forced the first OT with a basket in the final 15 seconds of regulation. Indian River's Kwanisha Jones (16 points) scored a layup just ahead of the horn at the end of the first OT and a three-pointer as time expired in the second overtime.

Niles made a pair of three-pointers in the third extra session.

Chloe Armstrong finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds Indian River.

Record leaps: Albert Johnson of Corning broke the Section 4 indoor records in the long jump (23-9) and triple jump (47-8) at the Hurley/Quinney Invitational at Cornell on Friday. The previous long jump mark by Israel Howard of Elmira Free Academy had stood for 30 years. Johnson already held the TJ record.

Fencers are tough: Great Neck North's Sari Levy, 17, won the girls epee in the Nassau County individual fencing tournament despite competing on a broken foot, Newsday reported.

Levy fractured a bone in her left foot last month. She had a similar injury last spring but still scored high finishes in U.S. Fencing Association events.

She's cut back to about 12 hours of training a week because of the injury.

Updated football data: I've revised yesterday's blog entry regarding football scholarships in order to add John Dowd of St. Peter's, whose commitment to Navy had not yet made its way into the Scout.com database of signings.

That brings to 19 the number of New York high school players signing on Letter of Intent day.

Keeping the heat on: The Buffalo News is keeping the pressure on city school officials in the aftermath of the firing of volunteer Coach Michelle Stiles and suspension of girls basketball player Jayvonna Kincannon.

Donn Esmonde wrote two columns on the topic this week, and reporter Michael Beebe dug deep into the background of boys basketball coach James Daye in the latest story.

Beebe reported that Daye has a somewhat blurry past, having departed a number of college (Niagara University) and high school positions after very short stays for reasons that remain mostly unclear. He's now caught up in the Buffalo controversy as it's alleged that he played a role on Stiles' firing.

Extra points: Syracuse Corcoran girls basketball Coach Jim Marsh recorded career victory No. 399 over the weekend in a 62-32 rout of Ogdensburg Free Academy. The Cougars do not play again until sectionals.
