Monday, Feb. 18, 2008: St. Raymond wipes out deficit, goes into OT to beat Lincoln
Leading off today: St. Raymond wiped out a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and went on to score a 75-73 victory in overtime over Abraham Lincoln in boys basketball yesterday at Long Island University.

Lincoln is third and St. Raymond ninth in the most recent rankings by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Darryl Bryant led the Ravens with 19 points and juniors Omari Lawrence and Kevin Parrom had 15 apiece. Lawrence helped limit junior sensation Lance Stephenson to 19 points.

Lincoln's Khalif Staten converted a three-point play with :12.2 to go to force the overtime. Parrom scored five points in the extra period to build the lead to 75-70.

A special moment: I'll let John D'Onofrio's lead set the scene:

"The boxscore read simply 'Linhart 2-0-5' — nothing more than a respectable scoring output for most high school junior varsity basketball players.

"But for Newfane senior Jeremy Linhart and a packed Newfane gymnasium crowd that included the infamous

'Blue Zone,' the accomplishment will go down as one of the most amazing, heart-warming and inspirational efforts ever witnessed in the history of the Panthers."

"'The atmosphere here was unbelievable,'" said former Panthers sports great Eric Klumpp (1998), now the junior varsity boys basketball head coach at Newfane. 'Everybody was on their feet and embracing the moment. It was a sight to see — something bigger than we could have ever imagined.'"

Klumpp, similar to the story of Jason McElwain ("J-Mac"), gave Ryan Linhart his first big chance four years ago by making the mentally handicapped and legally blind youth his "assistant coach." On Thursday, Klumpp handed the youngster a uniform shortly before the game against Royalton-Hartland.

Linhart entered the game to huge cheers with 3:50 to play to take two free throws, which he missed. A subsequent field-goal attempt was also off the mark, but a pull-up jumper went in, and Linhart followed up with a three-pointer.

Extra points: Walton's 46-42 victory over Oxford in the Midstate Athletic Conference title game on Saturday gave the boys basketball team its first overall league crown since 1963.
