Sunday, March 2, 2008: Seven of eight road teams win in state hockey quarterfinals
Leading off today: Road teams dominated the state hockey quarterfinals yesterday, with West Genesee the only home victor in eight games played across New York. And even that triumph required a great deal of extra work for the Wildcats.

Erich Haney's 21st goal of the season, coming with 2:22 to play in the third overtime, carried West Genesee to a 3-2 victory over Shenendehowa in the NYSPHSAA Division 1 tournament in Camillus.

Shenendehowa had rallied from a 2-0 deficit. West Genny will play Fairport in the semifinals.

Also in Division 1, Lancaster dominated Monroe-Woodbury (the 2007 Division 2 champion), 6-0, as goalie Paul Dudish turned aside all 16 shots he faced in Newburgh.

Arena security had to scamper onto the ice and Town of Newburgh police were called to deal with a third-period fight that cleared the benches. Monroe-Woodbury coach Paul Bacsardi said the fracas began after a Lancaster player punched defender Brad Campagna in the head, The Times Herald-Record reported. Campagna retaliated, setting off the incident.

Mamaroneck, which began the week by winning its sectional final with a goal in the final 15 seconds against Suffern, dropped a 3-2 verdict to Massena on a goal 29 seconds into overtime. Mamaroneck had a potential go-ahead goal disallowed with 2:46 left in regulation.

Trevor Mingoia scored twice and had an assist to lead Fairport to a 5-3 win against Saranac in Plattsburgh. Fairport held a 45-18 advantage in shots on goal.

In the Division 2 tournament, Queensbury survived six man-down situations and edged Skaneateles in OT, 3-2, on Matt Soprano's breakaway goal to set up a semifinal against Webster Thomas. Soprano had been thwarted on another breakway in the third period.

Justin Scharfe scored three goals and added an assist to carry Thomas to an 8-0 victory against Northeastern Clinton at Rouses Point. Matt Solimano made 23 saves, and Brett Bannon added a goal and three assists.

In another overtime game, Sweet Home eliminated Burke Catholic, 3-2, on Ryan Gutt's goal 3:01 into the extra period. Tom Mahoney had scored for Burke with 1:56 left in regulation.

Sweet Home will play Thousand Islands, a 4-2 winner against Rye in Mount Vernon thanks to three goals late in the second period and the clincher less than a minute into the third.

Henahan doubles in pool: Irondequoit senior Ricky Henahan won twice and broke his own state record in the 100-yard backstroke to capture top performer honors in the NYSPHSAA swimming championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow.

Mount Sinai junior Tom Luchsinger won the 200 freestyle in 1:39.38, taking down the state's oldest record (1985). He also placed third in the 100 backstroke. Holy Trinity sophomore Jack Wagner swept the freestyle sprints in :21.22 and :46.09.

Rye junior Ryan Feeley set the state record in the 500 freetyle, going 4:29.82 to wire the field and win by more than 5 seconds. Feeley was second to Luchsinger in the 200 free.

Cameron Bartlett of New Patlz won the 100 breaststroke for the second time in three years. He was third a year ago.

East Islip bowlers sweep: The East Islip boys and girls bowling teams won NYSPHSAA championships at White Plains AMF Lanes, marking the first sweep in the history of the event.

The boys knocked down 6,452 pins to rally past West Seneca East (6,408). Sophomore John Knierieman paced the champs with a 1,417 six-game block, including a 298 final game. Nick Morrissey of West Seneca East threw a 1,452 series to lead the field.

In girls action, East Islip won with 5,843 pins to hold off Columbia (5,710). Gina Maduri (Tonawanda) had the high game and series with 269 and 1,304, respectively.

Gymnastics championships: Mahopac's Kylie Shields won three individual events en route to second place in the all-around in the NYSPHSAA gymnastics championships at Carmel.

Jessica Panza of Island Trees took the all-around championship. Shields won on the balance beam, floor exercise and vault. Yorktown sophomore Danielle Bonner won the uneven bars and third in the all-around.

Indoor track: Lancaster sophomore Melissa Kurzdorfer broke her own sectional record in the shot put at the Section 6 championships in Fredonia, throwing 46 feet, 6 1/4 to win by more than eight feet. Her previous top throw this season was 41-1.

More to come: We'll be blogging on basketball later, catching up on sectional action from Saturday and Sunday across the state. Check back early tonight.
