Leading off today: Hammond senior guard Brittany Kenyon has repeated as state Class D girls basketball player of the year, the New York State Sportswriters Association announced today.

The announcement came along with the all-state selections and coach of the year awards made by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports, whose annual picks are recognized by the NYSSWA as the all-state team.

The players of the year in the other classifications are:

   Class AA: Shenise Johnson, Rush-Henrietta.
Class A: Alyson Johnson, Malone Franklin.
Class B: Kaitlin Donahoe, Buffalo Nichols.
   Class C: Brittany Shields, Haldane.

The coaches of the year are:

   Class AA: Stephen Shepanski, Rush-Henrietta.
Class A: Mike Wescott, Malone Franklin.
   Class B: Don Hamlin, Briarcliff.
   Class C: Kenny Haskins, Haldane.
   Class D: Shawn Dack, Hammond.

The lacrosse boom: Add Arsdley, Briarcliff and Irvington to the list of schools playing girls lacrosse this season,

Winter tournament brackets
  • Federation boys and girls basketball
  • NYSPHSAA boys basketball
  • NYSPHSAA girls basketball
  • NYSPHSAA boys ice hockey
  • bringing the total in Section 1 to 41 schools, The Journal News reports.

Ardsley moves up to varsity status on the heels of a 12-1 JV season and has no seniors and only three juniors. Irvington also has no seniors despite having 42 players on the varsity or JV levels.

Etcetera: Blogging on The Times Union site, James Allen reports that Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Paul Hewitt stopped by practice at Bishop Maginn last week to get another look at sophomore guard Taran Buie. Hewitt also visited the Syracuse area to see Jamesville-DeWitt junior Brandon Triche. Hewitt remains true to his upstate roots, having played at St. John Fisher College in Rochester and coached at Siena. . . . Sean Rogers posted the scoring line of the week on Saturday, scoring three goals and handing out nine assists as Holy Trinity beat New Hyde Park in boys lacrosse, 13-7. He's a two-time Empire State Games selection for the Long Island Region.
