Wednesday, June 4, 2008: Mineau throws third perfect game of season for Hoosic Valley
Leading off today: Jen Mineau threw her third perfect game of the softball season and Hoosic Valley extended its winning streak to 45 games yesterday with a 1-0 win vs. Schuylerville in the Section 2 Class B semifinals in Queenebury.

The Indians (20-0) have allowed two runs all year and posted 18 shutouts.

Mineau struck out 15 and didn't allow a ball out of the infield, which isn't surprising. As Greg Brownell noted in his game story, Hoosic Valley center fielder Eileen Farrell estimates she's touched the ball only two or three times in game situations so far this spring.

Football-like scores: Here are the highlights from a couple of sectional baseball games that won't be filed under "pitching duels."

Host Mamaroneck (25-2) scored four runs in the first inning and tacked on a couple of 10-run innings in the second and third for good measure to beat Ketcham, 24-18. Sophomore cleanup hitter Michael Rosenfeld posted four hits and seven RBI in the three-hour, 40-minute affair.

"Even their outs were hit hard," said Ketcham coach Pat Mealy. "We tried everything, but we had no answers for them on the mound."

After allowing a 10-run second, Ketcham cut into a 14-1 lead by scoring six runs in the top of the third only to fall behing again by a 24-7 margin.

At Candor, the home team carried a 12-run lead into the seventh and had to hang on for a 19-15 win against Marathon, which ended the game with the bases loaded. Jake Tubbs was 3-for-5 with four RBI for the winners.

Everyone's a critic: The formal launch won't happen until August, but that didn't stop Deadspin.com from getting in a few rips recently at ESPN's Rise magazine, which will be devoted to high school sports. Naturally, ESPN will go cross-platform and add a cable TV element to the project.

       Deadspin's take:

"So get ready for that reality show that follows a Pop Warner League football team through the good times and the bad. There's a fat kid, and a kid whose parents just don't understand him. And they're coached by Bill Romanowski and Flava Flav! (Thursdays at 7).

"I wish this venture all the best, because I've long thought that prep water polo has been sadly neglected at the national media level. But I also can't help but think that, like Alexander's forays into India, this seems a good example of an empire expanding too far. It's not enough for ESPN to bring us the Little League World Series and cover news like De La Salle of Concord (Calif.)'s national-record football winning streak. Everything needs to be compartmentalized over there, as the WWL acts like that person you know who won't allow different kinds of food to touch each other on their plate."

Hey, I dislike ESPN as much as the next guy, but even I'm willing to give the boys in Bristol, Conn., the benefit of the doubt until August at least.
