Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 (football edition): Carmel tops New Rochelle in three OTs
Leading off today: Junior QB Ryan Shilling hit Ali Haluci with short touchdown passes in the second and third overtimes Saturday to lift Carmel past New Rochelle in their football opener, 34-28.

Haluci and Andrew Jamison combined for four scoring grabs and two interceptions. Shilling completed 14 of 21 passes for 231 yards and four TDs, one of them a 53-yarder to Jamison on the opening possession Haluci snared a 61-yarder in the second quarter for a 14-7 lead.

New Rochelle committed four turnovers on six possessions in the second half, and one of Jamison's two picks set up a 10-play Carmel drive that tied the score at 21 late in the third quarter.

Carmel had the ball first in the third OT, with Shilling and Haluci hooking up on a 12-yard gain and then a 10-yard TD. New Rochelle turned the ball over on downs on its possession to end the game.

Tough day for St. A: Philadelphia powerhouse St. Joseph's Prep sacked QB Tom Schreiber with 1:23 to play, snuffing out St. Anthony's last chance and wrapping up a 7-6 victory in a high-profile interstate clash in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Schreiber, a junior making his first start, fought his way into the end zone for a first-quarter TD that held up until Garrett Compton capped a 42-yard, four-play drive with a 1-yard run with 10:46 left to play.

"I thought we had our opportunities," Friars coach Rich Reichert told Newsday. "It was a great football game."

Making the most of it: Mount Vernon, whose players didn't even know a month ago whether budget woes would cancel the season, rolled to a 38-0 victory over Lincoln in the opener.

QB Stephon Ramsey and Andre Gaynor connected for TD passes of 76 and 32 yards, and Ramsey also completed a 60-yarder to Davon Moore to make the score 30-0 in the second quarter.

"I'm glad we could put a team out and represent," Mount Vernon coach Ric Wright told The Journal News. "Winning is great, but for us, just having a season this year is kind of a victory."
