Leading off today: Jamesville-DeWitt star Brandon Triche will continue his basketball career at Syracuse University,
The Post-Standard reported today.
Triche, a 6-foot-4 senior point guard, made his decision without visiting Georgetown and Connecticut, two other leading contenders for his services. Other schools, encouraged by the fact that Triche had not yet committed to the home-town school, had started stepping up their recruiting as well.
"He fooled me," Triche's father, Melvin, told the paper. "I had taken the time off from work to make the trips out of town. Then he came back and said he had already made up his mind and he was ready to get it over with."
Triche led Jamesville-DeWitt to the state Class A championship as a junior, averaging 20.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists en route to player of the year honors from the New York State Sportswriters Association. His sophomore season ended with a December 2006 knee injury.
Rankings update: The first NYSSWA football rankings of the season were posted this morning, with 2008 NYSPHSAA champions West Genesee (AA), Aquinas (A), Rye (B), Bishop Ludden (C) and Walton (D) holding down the top spots in their respective classes after a 10-0 start and 380-100 scoring margin this far.
We've also gotten the girls soccer rankings off the ground, with Massapequa (AA), Victor (A), Briarcliff (B), Hoosick Falls (C) and Edmeston (D) ruling the roost for now.
I was at Victor's 6-0 triumph against East Irondequoit last night, after which Blue Devils coach Kelly Ahern broke the news of the No. 1 ranking to her players. She also issued a challenge to her Blue Devils: "My expectations of you are now higher than ever," she told them. "The bar has been raised."
Good luck to all the No. 1's and those in pursuit of them.
