Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 (football edition): Sayville prevails in two OTs vs. Half Hollow Hills West
Leading off today: Corey Caulfield's 4-yard touchdown run in the second overtime proved to be the winning margin as Sayville earned a 35-28 victory over Half Hollow Hills West yesterday in a faceoff between ranked Class A football teams.

Sayville is rated 17th and HHH West 24th by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

HHH West quarterback David DiMaria (13-for-20, 164 yards), who had already thrown three touchdown passes to Brian Donovan, hit Donovan again in the back of the end zone in the second OT, but the receiver came down out of bounds.

Sayville rallied in the fourth quarter from a 21-7 deficit and recovered a fumble with 46 seconds left, but a 33-yard field goal attempt by Caulfield (14 carries, 74 yards) sailed just wide to force overtime. Dillion Boos kept Sayville alive in the second OT with a twisting 20-yard TD run to help forge a 28-28 tie.

Shaking up Class A: A pair of highly regarded Long Island football teams bit the dust in Class A football action.

Charlie Porazzo's 20-yard run midway through the third quarter was the difference for Calhoun in a 21-14 victory over Elmont, ranked ninth by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Porazzo ran for 40 yards on the drive and finished the afternoon with 14 carries for 78 yards.

Calhoun scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns following fumbles by Elmont, which had taken a 6-0 lead on the third play of the game on Justin Mayers' 42-yard run.

Running back A.J. Fusco scored on a 7-yard run in the second overtime as host Plainedge topped No. 21 Wantagh, 20-14. Kevin Kennedy (13 carries, 122 yards) set up the winning score with a 12-yard run on the previous play.

Mike Rossi's lunging interception on Wantagh's ensuing possession wrapped up the victory. Plainedge forced overtime on Fusco's 6-yard run with 2:06 to go, capping an eight-play, 58-yard drive.

Clarence upends Frontier: Diminutive tailback Josh Rawdin rushed 17 times for 130 yards and senior fullback Jack Vogel scored on a 2-yard run with 8:15 left as Clarence earned a 21-14 upset of Frontier, ranked No. 20 in Class AA.

Clarence took a 14-7 lead on a Vogel 1-yard TD run one play after sophomore Cameron Dimitroff broke free for a 51-yard gain.

Frontier was hit with more than 100 yards in penalties, including four illegal procedure calls on its first series of the game. Vogel also added 12 tackles from his linebacker position.

More ranked matchups: Junior Dominique Easley's 66-yard touchdown off a fumble recovery highlighted Staten Island Curtis' 34-0 rout of Boys & Girls. Curtis is ranked eighth and Boys & Girls 25th in Class AA. Curtis held the 'Roos to just two first downs and 44 yards of offense.

In Class A, No. 1 Aquinas won its home opener over No. 19 Buffalo Riverside, 34-8, as Ben Bostick finished 9-for-12 for 108 yards and a touchdown. Casey Vogl ran 26 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns for the Little Irish, who built a 27-0 halftime lead.

Sophomore Christopher Esposito scored the clinching TD on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter as Byram Hills, No. 18 in Class B, rallied past No. 9 Nanuet, 17-7.

"We haven't always done our best in big games," Coach John Naughton said. "For us to come through against a Nanuet team that is really good is great.

On Friday, Class B No. 2 Chenango Forks edged No. 16 Chittenango, 7-3, as Ryan Freije scooped up a Forks fumble at Chittenango's 30-yard line and ran for a TD with five minutes to play. Chittenango reached Forks' 13 before Mike Jeske made a game-clinching interception with 1:04 left.

In Class C, No. 9 Cleveland Hill dominated No. 18 Gowanda, 39-14, with a 348-yard ground attack. Rhakeen Wiggins started the scoring with a 38-yard run in the first quarter, and Pete Westbrook (15 carries, 87 yards) punched in a second-quarter score on a 10-yard run.

No. 2 Maple Grove rolled past No. 8 Portville, 38-8, in Class D action as Chris Secky threw 65 yards to Jake Larson for a score on the game's second play from scrimmage. Secky finished 8-for-10 for 186 yards and four touchdowns, and Maple Grove limited Luke Hellwig to 98 yards on 32 carries after he had picked up 378 yards in the first two weeks.

Deadly accuracy: Zach Dolan went 12-of-13 for 221 yards and three touchdowns to lead Troy, No. 23 in Class A, to a 34-0 victory over Scotia-Glenville. Dolan completed his first seven attempts.

"The receivers ran good routes (and) the coaches got them ready for anything," Dolan said. "The first two weeks we really couldn't do anything, but today we knew we had to start throwing and we did. Our line was giving us time to throw the ball and the receivers were getting open."

Hilton dispatched Penfield, 56-27, as Duell Smith went 8-for-11 for 218 yards and a TD. Four different players scored as the Cadets broke to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter.

St. Joseph's-by-the-Sea got past Archbishop Stepinac, 31-21, on the strength of Joe Collins' 14-of-16 passing for 137 yards and a touchdown. Maurice Easterling caught nine balls for 103 yards. Andrew Armato (28 carries, 191 yards) and Lyle McCombs (21 for 162) combined for 352 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Anthony Gentile was 7-for-11 for 205 yards and two touchdowns as Tuckahoe topped Albertus Magnus, 33-12. Mike Workman rushed 10 times for 140 yards and a score.

Saturday's rapid recap: Will Small ran for 75 yards and two touchdowns as Hackley downed host St. Luke's, 20-6, to give Rob Pickert his 200th win with the Hornets. Pickert is 200-94-5 in 37 seasons.

Rob Alexander posted two touchdowns and 200 all-purpose yards, including an 80-yard punt return, as Dobbs Ferry topped Bronxville, 28-0. Devonte Brailsford added 16 carries for 128 yards and had two touchdowns.

Highland Falls O'Neil scored three TDs in the final 2:30 of the third quarter to pull away from Red Hook, 41-7. O'Neill QB Aaron Kilner threw three scoring passes and Marshall Moten ran for 169 yards and a touchdown.
