Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009: Honeoye Falls-Lima dominates first day of skiing championships
Leading off today: Honeoye Falls-Lima dominated the first day of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association skiing championships at Bristol Mountain and Harriet Hollister Spencer Park on Tuesday.

Cougars junior Steve Mangan, a disappointing third at the recent Section 5 meet, won the boys nordic 10K classic title while senior Kelly Burgart won the girls slalom title and senior Steve Zotter captured the boys slalom.

Mangan finished in 30:22.1 to hold off Queensbury standout Kevin Sprague by a second and lead a parade of five HF-L competitors in the top 14. In the girls 7.5K race, Carly Wynn of Queensbury won in 27:10.8 to beat HF-L junior Amanda Moreland by 52 seconds and prevent a sweep of the day's individual honors.

Zotter was clocked in 1:42.75 over two runs to edge Steve Brown Shenendehowa (1:42.80). Sisters Kelly and Taylor Burgart of HF-L finished 1-2 in the girls slalom.

Basketball highlights: Liz McGinley of Canastota scored eight points and had 15 rebounds during a 54-25 girls victory over Hannibal, making her the first player in school history to compile 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Alicia Hibbard paced the winners with 23 points.

Second-seeded Carthage fought off 10th seed New Hartford, 55-50, in two overtimes. New Hartford committed 20 more fouls than Carthage and lost four players to disqualification.

In Section 5 boys action, senior Josh Laureano's off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer in the second OT carried Kendall to a 77-74 win over Cuba-Rushford. Laureano finished with a school-record 51 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. He was 17-for-19 from the field, including four three-pointers, and made 13 of 14 free throws.

Roosevelt Bouie held Kendall's previous record with 47 points.

Death at William Floyd: Corey Stark was participating in the first practice of the year for a rugby club at William Floyd when he suddenly collapsed yesterday and later died, officials told Newsday.

District spokesman James Montalto said it was a non-contact practice and Stark, 17, was stricken while warming up with approximately 50 players and coaches. The cause of Stark's death is still under investigation, police said.

Uncertainty at Maginn: Joe Grasso has been the principal at Bishop Maginn High School since 1984, but his future there is in doubt after being offered the position of associate principal by Superintendent Sister Jane Herb.

"We could have worked together on it but the path that was taken is not one I was agreeable to," Grasso told WRGB-TV. "It's a slap in the face in my view."

  •    Grasso said it was left to him to inform the school board of his potential demotion. although the Rev. Michael Hogan, president of the board, confirmed Herb has sole responsibility to hire and fire.

Grasso has been the varsity football coach at Maginn since 1977. He is second among active Section 2 coaches in wins with 181.

Expansion proposal shot down: Citing concern about school sizes, Tri Valley League superintendents and ADs decided Tuesday to deny bids by the Utica and Rome school districts to join the league in most sports.

"It didn't relate to whether (Utica and Rome) would dominate,” Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Superintendent Norman Reed said. "The enrollment was too disproportionate to feel we could ensure fair play and safety."

With 2,028 and 1,276 students, respectively, Utica Proctor and Rome Free Academy would dwarf Holland Patent (425) and Clinton (437) if they moved over from the Central New York Counties League.

The CNYCL is dominated by Syracuse-area schools, creating travel headaches for RFA and Proctor.

Utica and Rome teams already play TVL schools in a number of modified sports, and TVL officials expect that to continue. They also were agreeable to scheduling non-league varsity and JV games when appropriate.

218 wins, zero losses: Eric Grajales won his fourth straight Florida state high school wrestling championship over the weekend, running his career record to 218-0.

"I waited for this my whole life," he said after his final match, "and that last minute, it was a little hard for me. It hit me that this was coming to an end."

The Brandon High senior was one of the team's record seven state champs. His brother Cesar Jr., who now attends Penn, was also a four-time champ and ended his career with two losses.

Eric Grajales is the top-rated 135-pound scholastic wrestler in the country and last summer competed for a spot at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He will wrestle at the University of Michigan on a full scholarship.

Extra points: There will be no girls basketball rankings released this week. Look for an update next Wednesday.
