Wednesday, March 25, 2009: Triche selected New York player of the year by Gatorade
Leading off today: Jamesville-DeWitt guard Brandon Triche has been selected Gatorade's boys basketball player of the year in New York.

The 6-foot-4 senior, fresh off leading J-D to a second straight NYSPHSAA Class A championship in Glens Falls. is averaging 22.3 points, 6.7 assists and 6.2 rebounds per game. He was the NYSSWA Class A player of the year last season.

J-D is 26-1 and heading to this weekend’s Federation Class A semifinals against Iona Prep.

West Genny opens with a win: Defending boys state Class A lacrosse champion West Genesee gave up the first two goals of the game, then rallied to an 8-6 victory over Irondequoit in its 2009 opener yesterday.

It was the 13th straight victory for the Wildcats. Junior midfielder John Glesener scored two goals and was 8-for-11 on faceoffs.

"We've got a long ways to go," 34th-year coach Mike Messere told The Post-Standard after the game. "We're going to need much better efforts at the offensive end of the field than this from now on."

In other upstate lacrosse, Corning East earned a 15-10 win against Corning West, giving the Trojans a 100-1 record in the all-time series. East had been 97-0 until dropping a 9-8 overtime game in May 2007.

Former all-stater slain: Former all-state boys basketball player Chris Rogers was killed yesterday in front of his house in Rochester. Rogers, 22, was 12th-team all-state in Class AA for East High in 2005.

Police said Rogers was shot at least once. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead.

  •    Rogers has the hero of East's 65-61 victory against Rush-Henrietta for the Section 5 championship as a senior. The Orientals trailed with 2:30 to play.

"Chris demanded the ball," coach Dan Barley told the Democrat and Chronicle. "He showed us what a leader is like."

Authorities say they were mislead: A Putnam Valley Middle School teacher and coach making more than $100,000 a year resigned after the district learned he had falsely claimed to have a master's degree and that his provisional teaching certificate had expired, The Journal News reported.

Timothy Henkels, 35, resigned effective March 5, the paper said. His most recent annual salary was $103,294. In addition to teaching eighth-grade science, he was an assistant high school football coach.

Extra points: Charles G. Finney, undefeated until running into Maple Grove in the state quaretrfinals this month, will move up to Class C in boys basketball in 2009-10 according to Section 5 . . . Troy Catholic Central boys basketball coach Blain Goverski has resigned after four years at his alma mater. The Crusaders were 5-16 this season. . . . Rice senior forward James Stukes will attend South Kent (Conn.) Prep next year with the hope of attracting more attention from recruiters. Stukes had tentatively planned to attend Robert Morris.
