Friday, May 22, 2009: PSAL standout throws no-hitter one day after his father's funeral
Leading off today: Jordan Wiener threw a no-hitter yesterday in a PSAL playoff game one day after the funeral for his father Mitchell, a Queens educator who was New York City's city's first swine flu fatality.

Jordan Wiener struck out 14 for RFK against Prospect Heights in the 10-0 victory, which was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. The game was in the first round of the "B" League baseball playoffs.

"When my father was put in the hospital on (May 13), I told myself, 'Death or survival, I was going to pitch,' " he told The Daily News "I knew that's what he would have wanted from me, to go out there and pitch. I was going to pitch no matter what."

The senior, who will attend Queens College in the fall, was 6-0 with a 0.68 ERA in the regular season.

"He's cut from the same cloth as his father," RFK coach Mike Mulstay said. "Not only him but his whole family. He's a one-in-a-million kid. It was special."

Plante suing district: The state's winningest hockey coach has filed a $1 million federal lawsuit against the Salmon River Central School District in an attempt to get his coaching jobs back, The Daily Times in Watertown reported.

William Plante filed suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Syracuse, against the district, Superintendent Jane A. Collins, and several members of the Board of Education.

Plante has 542 career hockey wins and a record six state championships. He also coached girls varsity volleyball, boys modified lacrosse and girls modified softball and was an athletic club advisor. He has taught phys ed in the district since 1979.

The suit says Plante was notified by Collins in a Feb. 21, 2008, letter that the school board had met the previous day

Plante says the district never provided him with a hearing to tell his side prior to the removal. The suit complaint does not specify the reason he was removed as coach, the paper said.

Track coach accused: Williamsville South girls track coach Sammy A. Hasan, has been arrested by Amherst police and accused of two counts of forcibly touching a female student, The Buffalo News reported.

He's also charged with one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated harassment, police said. All four charges are misdemeanors.

Hasan, 47, who does not teach in the district, has been dismissed as coach, the paper reported. He also coached cross country and indoor track.

The arrest followed a complaint from the family member of a 17-year girl, the paper reported. He was arraigned in Amherst Town Court and released on his own recognizance. He is due back in court June 24.

Extra points: Sachem East junior point guard Kristen Doherty will enroll at Boston College in September 2010 to continue her career, Newsday reported. Doherty averaged 28 points, 5.6 steals and 3.8 assists last season to lead her team to the Section XI Class AA championship game. She posted seven 30-point games as a junior and will start her final season with 1,691 career points.
