Monday, June 1, 2009: C-NS knocks off Proctor in Section 3 baseball semifinals
Leading off today: Utica Proctor's bid for three straight Section 3 Class AA baseball championships ended yesterday with a 5-3 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse in the rain-delayed semifinals.

After Proctor tied the game in the top half of the inning, the Northstars took a 5-2 lead in the sixth on a single by Steve Salamone and a two-run single by Aaron Hidreth. Proctor responded with a run in the seventh but left the bases loaded as C-NS shortstop John Howell chased down a grounder in the hole and made the throw to first base.

On Saturday, Proctor had scored a 4-1 win vs. West Genesee when Mike Scotellaro hit a walk-off, three-run homer to right field with two outs in the seventh inning at Murnane Field.

C-NS plays Auburn for the Class AA title tomorrow at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse.

More Sunday baseball: Skaneateles routed Holland Patent, 15-3, in the Section 3 Class B semifinals as Zach Augustine went 3-for-5 and drove in six runs. The big blow was a bases-clearing double in the second inning, and teammate Sean Cooney added a bases-loaded triple in the seventh. The Lakers will try to avenge two regular-season losses when they play Tuesday vs. Westhill, which brings a 15-game winning streak into the final.

In Buffalo, St. Francis and Canisius advanced to their fourth consecutive Georgetown Cup final. The Frannies extended their winning streak to 10 with a 2-0 victory over St. Joe’s as Sean Larson pitched a three-hitter. Canisius advanced with a 12-2 win over Timon/St. Jude as James Tronolone (four innings, nine strikeouts), Josh Vaccaro and Luke Klee combined on a one-hitter.

The best-of-three final series will start tomorrow at St. Joe’s. St. Francis and Canisius split during the regular season.

Bozzelli poised to repeat: McQuaid senior Dominic Bozzelli is half way to defending his NYSPHSAA boys golf championship after shooting a 1-under-par 71 for a two-stroke lead at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca.

"I've been really looking forward to this tournament all year, especially with it being my last high school tournament," Bozzelli told the Democrat and Chronicle. "I want to make sure I go out with a round I can be proud of."

Tom Scherrer, now a PGA Tour professional from Syracuse, won back-to-back in 1988-89.

  •    Bozzelli bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 to finish 1-under in windy conditions.

McQuaid junior Andrew Lane is in second place, two strokes behind Bozzelli. Dylan Newman of New Rochelle posted an opening 74 to stand another shot back.

A cool moment: Jordan Wiener got to do something yesterday that few 18-year-olds do when he threw the first pitch at Citi Field before the Mets- Marlins game.

The Robert F. Kennedy ace's father, Mitchell Wiener, died on May 15 after contracting swine flu, and his funeral was May 20. The next day, Jordan threw a five-inning no-hitter in the PSAL playoffs.

"The No. 1 thing is my father and I are both big baseball fans, big Mets fans," Wiener, who wore a No. 57 Johan Santana jersey, told The Daily News. "If he were here, he'd tell me to concentrate and throw a curveball."

Preliminary pigskin picks: MaxPreps.com writer Stephen Spiewak posted his national top 25 preview of high school football contenders for the 2009 season and projects Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas as the No. 1 team.

The Raiders went 15-0 last fall en route to defending the state Class 5A championship and then had eight seniors sign letters of intent with Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) colleges. Three others committed to Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) schools.

Not surprisingly, there are no New York teams in the top 25. But there is at least one notable New York connection. The coach at No. 6 Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith is Richard Morgan, who led that school to a 15-0 mark and the Virginia AAA Division 6 championship last fall. Morgan previously coached at Thousand Islands from 1999-2000 and the following season at Fairport before taking over at the Virginia school in 2002.

Spiewak calls Morgan "as good as any coach in the country at grooming young talent."
