Sunday, June 14, 2009: Johnson City's Martinez goes sub-9:00 in 3,200 meters
Leading off today: Lanky Johnson City senior Jeff Martinez's final 3,200-meter race on Friday was a gem and earned him the title at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association track and field meet at Cicero-North Syracuse.

Martinez finished in 8 minutes, 57.60 seconds to demolish the Section 4 record of 9:05.2 posted by Brian Clas of Union-Endicott to win the 1990 championship.

Chris Stogsdill of Marcellus pushed the early pace and led at the midpoint with a 4:24.4 split, but Martinez went 1:01.38 on the bell lap to fend off John Miller of Arlington (9:00.60). Stogsdill faded to fourth in 9:08.84.

"I don't know what could have gone better my way," Martinez told The Press & Sun-Bulletin.

Some other noteworthy moments from the meet, which concluded yesterday:

Roslyn junior Emily Lipari won the 3,000 of Friday for the third straight year, finishing in 9:38.66 to hold off Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall (9:40.25). She tacked on a second place in the 1,500 the next day as Megan Patrignelli of Monroe-Woodbury clocked 4:25.65, third in the country this season.

Speaking of distance work, Chaminade's Michael Kiley wired the steeplechase field in 9:13.92 to take over the national high school lead and Alex Hatz of Fayettevile Manlius took the No. 3 spot on the 1,00 list with a meet- record 4:06.11.

At the other end of the distance spectrum, Saratoga sophomore Madalayne Smith ran the 100-meter hurdles in :13.88 and :13.80 on consecutive days to win the NYSPHSAA Division I and Federation championships, respectively. NaTasha Greggs (Rochester Wilson) and Will Cole (Hamburg) sizzled in the intermediate hurdles in 1:01.26 and :52.77, respectively.

Ashley Fields of Amherst swept the girls Federation dashes in :11.85 and :23.66. Fellow Section 6 star Melissa Kurzdorfer of Lancaster swept NYSPHSAA Division I and Federation firsts in both weight events, flinging ths discus 158-9.

Suffern's Jenn Clayton long jumped 20-6.25 and 20-7 on consecutive days en route to Federation honors.

Baseball finals recap: Mamaroneck defended its NYSPHSAA Class AA championship with a 12-2 victory over Clarence at NYSEG Stadium on the heels of a 4-3, 11-inning victory over Massapequa in the semifinals.

Senior and four-year starter Matt McGovern scored three runs in the final and hit a home run vs. Clarence to give the Tigers an 8-2 lead. In the semifinal, he threw seven scoreless innings of three-hit relief after entering a 3-3 game with two on and none out in the fifth. He retired the first 13 batters he faced en route to running his streak to 13 shutout innings during the playoffs.

Mamaroneck, which is 74-10-1 since the start of the 2007 season, won the semifinal when junior cleanup hitter Mike Rosenfeld hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded following an intentional pass to McGovern.

Mamaroneck has won 16 straight postseason games.

In Class A, senior outfielder Alan Komoroswki delivered run-scoring hits in the fourth and sixth innings of Aquinas' 3-1 triumph against W.T. Clarke in support of a four-hitter by junior Ray Kelly hours after classmate and staff ace Jed Lemen threw a four-hitter during a 4-1 win over Mexico.

Komorowski's fourth-inning single plated what proved to be the winning run for the Little Irish, who outscored their final four playoff opponents by 23-2.

Clarke had won state championships in 2002 and 2005.

Westhill ran the table against New York competition this spring, capping a 29-2 season with an 8-1 triumph against Dobbs Ferry in Class B. Mike Carr drove in a combined seven runs against Dobba Ferry and the 4-2 victory against Fredonia in the semifinals.

The Warriors' only losses were to out-of-state opponents during a spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. They won their final 28 games of the season, including seven in the postseason by an aggregate 48-14.

Mechanicville repeated as the Class B champion and won its sixth crown since 2000 without the benefit of a senior on the roster.

"These kids are unbelievable," Mechanicville coach Don Arceneaux told The Times Union after a 3-1 win over Fredonia in the title game. "They get down and they come back. This is one big family. ... It doesn't get old to come here and win them."

Afton routed S.S. Seward, 18-2, in the semifinal game earlier in the day as Abbie Martin went 4-for-4 .
