Friday, July 3, 2009: U-E's Thomas says he'll sign to play football at Rutgers
Leading off today: Multiple recruiting sources reported yesterday that Union-Endicott's Jordan Thomas has given an oral commitment to Rutgers, making him the ninth New York high school football prospect in the class of 2010 to announce a college choice thus far.

Thomas, projected as a wide receiver or safety in college, recently attended the Scarlet Knights camp. He told Scout.com he delivered the news by phone to Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.

"I just want to be the best player I can be ... and the best receiver in the nation," he said. "That’s my goal. Here I come."

Scout.com rates Thomas, a fourth-team all-state pick by the New York State Sportswriters Association last fall, as a three-star prospect. The other other multi-star prospect still on the board at this point — typically several players get upgraded over the course of the summer following camp appearances — is Staten Island Curtis four-star defensive end Dominique Easley.

Syracuse leads the way with five commitments from New York players (QB John Kindler of Lawrence, LB Malcolm Cater of Riverhead, OL Macy MacPherson of Syracuse CBA, S Mario Tull of Xaverian and RB Steven Rene of Canarsie).

Johnson City DT DaQuan Jones selected Penn State last week, Pittsford TE Sean Fitzpartick will attend Maryland and Bishop Kearney DE Jerome Lewis is going to Virginia Tech.

Mount Vernon's Palmer to West Va.: Sixth-team all-state guard Taylor Palmer of Mount Vernon says she'll sign a letter of intent in the fall to continue her basketball career at West Virginia.

"I was just going to wait until the end of the summer to make a decision, but I went to West Virginia and it was the perfect fit," the 5-foot-8 Palmer told The Journal News.

Palmer was also getting interest from Boston College, Providence, Seton Hall, Princeton and Iona after averaging 16.2 points and 3.8 assists for the school's first sectional championship team in girls basketball since 1983.

How's this for irony? The three players who spearheaded a move of the PSAL's girls soccer season from spring to fall might not be of the field this fall, Forest Hills coach Bob Sprance says.

Sprance has been a leading activist against the season shift, which the New York City Department of Education initiated in order to head off an anticipated Title IX challenge. The Advance reported Sprance made his remarks in a radio interview expected to be aired this afternoon on WNYE-FM.

The families of three players initiated the push to change seasons on the grounds that playing in the spring might be diminishing college opportunities for female players. Sprance and other critics say that a shortage of coaches, officials and playing space in the fall will have a negative effect on both boys and girls soccer.

According to Sprance, one of the players may not recover in time from a March knee injury, a second was dropped from her team last spring and the third attends School of the Future, which may not have enough players to field a team in the fall according to coach Steve Schmidt.
