Kicking off: Senior QB Danny Scalo punished Binghamton for 428 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns to lead
Monroe-Woodbury to 64-34 non-league win over the Patriots last night as the 2009 football season opened.
Scalo was 8-for-9 for 247 yards with four touchdowns and rushed for 181 yards on 19 carries, scoring on runs of 6, 12 and 21 yards as M-W won for the 59th time in 63 games.
The Crusaders, state Class AA finalists four straight seasons, led 35-26 at halftime and then turned it on in the final 24 minutes.
Binghamton running back Dorian Feggins carried 33 times for 270 yards. Junior QB Wayne Bonsell completed 16 of 27 passes for 162 yards and three TDs.
First down: Schenectady, one of last season's feel-good stories, capitalized on six Albany turnovers to score 40 unanswered points in a 47-20 home victory.
It was the first game for head coaches Pete Porcelli of Albany, who came over from Lansingburgh over the summer, and the Patriots' Jim Kramer. Kramer was an assistant last year as Schenectady posted eight wins for the best season in school history.
Schenectady trailed 12-7 early in the second quarter before converting five fumble recoveries into TDs or eventual scores. The Patriots also capitalized on special teams by foiling a fake punt and recovering a snap over the head of the Albany punter.
Schenectady junior QB Tim Cox threw for two scores and ran for two more.
Five people were taken into custody after a fight broke out among fans who left late in the game, The Times Union reported. Numerous police cars responded to the fracas; specific charges filed are not yet known.
Two disorderly conduct arrests unrelated to the fight were made during the game, police said.
Second down: Defending NYSPHSAA champions Orchard Park and Maple Grove won their openers in dramatic fashion.
Defending Class AA champion Orchard Park survived prevailed against Lockport in double overtime 32-26, with Okoya Anderson (28 carries, 169 yards) scoring two TDs, including the winning 15-yard run.
Meanwhile, Chris Secky of Class D Maple Grove scored on a 1-yard plunge with 3:11 left and then kicked the extra point to fight off Randolph 7-6 in a game that was scoreless through three quarters.
Third down: Junior QB Ashton Broyld's Rush-Henrietta debut was a success as he rushed 26 times for 121 yards, ran for two TDs and threw for two to power a 28-21 victory in a win at Webster Schroeder to bring some early-season clarity to the Section 5 Class AA hierarchy.
