Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009: Jacoutot retires from Spencerport wrestling
Leading off today: Spencerport wrestling coach Bill Jacoutot announced his retirement to team members this afternoon, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

His Rangers won 21 Section 5 championship in 28 seasons, and Jacoutot coached 11 of the school's 12 individual state champions. Spencerport has won the last three New York State Sportswriters Association championships and are 62-0 over the last four seasons.

Jacoutot, whose family has a storied and successful history in the sport, was named the National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association in 2008. He retired as dean of middle-school students last June.

"I don't think there has been a day in the past 18 months that someone hasn't asked (about him retiring), even when I am in (his native) New Jersey," Jacoutot, 57, told the paper. "It was about time to put it to rest."

First fall rankings: Monroe-Woodbury starts the season at No. 1 in the first NYSSWA football rankings of the season, released today. The Crusaders start one spot ahead of defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association champion Orchard Park.

The other early-season No. 1's are Sweet Home (Class A), Lansingburgh (B), Jamestown Southwestern (C) and Westmoreland (D). Sweet Home and Southwestern are defending state champs.

By the way, our gratitude goes out to the folks at the New York High School Helmet Project for allowing us to use their library of artwork to dress up the rankings pages this season.

The boys soccer rankings begin where we left off 10 months ago. Defending state champions Brentwood (AA), Comsewogue (A). Bronxville (B), Red Creek (C) and Hamilton (D) hold down the initial top spots.

A blow for Shen: Shenendehowa, No. 23 in the initial Class AA football rankings, appears to have lost senior running back Suhayb Banks for the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, The Times Union reported.

Shen plays No. 21 Ballston Spa Thursday.

Banks, who ran for 1,135 yards and scored 21 touchdowns last fall, hurt his right knee early in last last week’s 28-27 victory vs. Schenectady.

lost center midfielder Jaime Salcedo to an apparent shoulder injury early in yesterday's 7-0 victory vs. Newfane, The Buffalo News reported. Peter Duerden and Vincent Chimento scored twice apiece as sophomores accounted for six goals.

Niagara Catholic won in boys soccer for the first time since 1990 as Adam Winkworth scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Tapestry Charter School. The Patriots restored their varsity program last year, going winless.

St. John's-bound senior Amy Marron broke the Westchester County goals record Monday in Westlake's 4-2 win over New Rochelle. Marron scored twice to push her career total to 116, two better than Katie Cupertino, a 2001 Bronxville graduate.

Time runs out on Tocke: Gary Tocke's 41-year run coaching Kenmore East boys volleyball is over after 500 wins. Tocke retired from teaching in 2000, leaving him vulnerable to being bumped by an active teacher. That finally happened when modified coach Kyle Horvatis applied for the position, The Buffalo News reported.

Tocke founded the program in 1968 and coached varsity and JV for the first 18 seasons. His clubs wonn seven Section 6 titles.

Extra points: Fox Lane's Joe Godette has moved back into the New Rochelle district, The Journal News reported. Teammed with P.J. Torres and Antoine Mason, he could vault the Huguenots into contention in Class AA basketball. . . . Mount Vernon's Bob Cimmino has added AD duties but will continue to coach boys basketball.
