Football two-minute read: Games of Friday, Sept. 18, 2009
Kicking off: Colby Morabito blocked an extra-point attempt in the first overtime and caught the go-ahead TD pass in the third OT as Hilton edged Gates Chili 27-26 last night.

Hilton, ranked No. 10 in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association, avenged a loss to the Spartans in the 2008 Section 5 semifinals.

"Once the overtime started it felt like we lost the game three times and then won it three times," Hilton coach Rich Lipani told the Democrat and Chronicle.

Hilton's Mike Ingoglia (22 carries, 130 yards) scored on a 4-yard run in the first OT, but the Cadets missed the extra point. C.J. Hodge then scored on a 1-yard run for Gates Chili, but Morabito blocked the kick.

In the third OT, Morabito caught a 6-yard pass from Duell Smith and the Cadets converted the kick. Elijah Thomas countered with a 6-yard run, but the Spartans bobbled the snap on an attempt to go for two points and the win, ending the contest.

First down: Running back Malik Burks finished with 247 yards, including a 17-yard run to give Baldwinsville its first lead of the night in third quarter as the No. 14 Bees edged No. 3 Syracuse CBA 30-28 in a Section 3 Class AA showdown.

On the previous possession, Niko Manning drove the Bees down the field for a Burks 3-yard TD run and a 14-14 tie.

CBA had taken a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a pair of interceptions.

Second down: Mason Parmelee caught four TD passes from Troy Schiess to propel Newark Valley to a 33-30 upset of host Waverly, ranked fourth in Class C.

Parmelee scoring catches of 8, 14, 33 and 22 yards helped Newark Valley take a 33-8 lead. The Wolverines scored the final 22 points but were unable to recover an onside kick with 1:04 to go.

Kevin Gorman ran 34 times for 220 yards and scored a pair of TDs for Newark Valley.

Third down: T.J. McLaughlin threw for 169 yards and three TDs to pace Class B No. 1 Lansingburgh to a 51-19 rout of Cohoes. First-year coach Al McNall's Knights rolled up 404 yards of offense.

The Knights forced three turnovers, and Mark Tracey's tackle for a safety in the first quarter set off a 44-point run that ended with Anthony Fogarty's 92-yard kickoff return for a Cohoes TD late in the contest.

Lansingburgh has scored 128 points in three games by going to the air more than in the past.

"It feels a lot better, everybody is catching the ball and the team is working real well," McLaughlin told The Times Union. "The team is working hard all week in practice. Our offense came out strong tonight."

Fourth down: Saratoga Springs turned the ball over eight times -- six on fumbles -- but limited Albany to 91 yards on offense and registered two safeties for an 18-0 victory at Bleecker Stadium.

"You win 18-0 and you don't feel really good about it. It is kind of strange," Saratoga Springs coach Terry Jones told The Times Union. "Defensively, I'm ecstatic. ... (But) eight turnovers?"

The Blue Streaks forced Albany to punt following its first possession and senior Tony Deloatch promptly returned it 71 yards for a touchdown. But Saratoga Springs finished the first half with two lost fumbles and two interceptions en route to a 9-0 lead.

Saratoga Springs held the Falcons to 25 yards rushing on 35 carries.

Quick kicks: Senior John Strong rushed 20 times for 187 yards in his first start, scored two TDs and intercepted the pass that ended the final threat as No. 19

Fulton fought off No. 20 East Syracuse-Minoa 33-20 in Class A.

The Red Raiders scored on their first possession on a 65-yard scamper by junior quarterback Brett Williams and ES-M answered with a 30-yard TD run by Dustin Moss (32 carries, 187 yards). On the ensuing kickoff, however, Strong raced 88 yards untouched for touchdown and Williams ran in the conversion for a 14-7 lead.

Following a defensive stop, Williams hooked up with Max Ambuske for a 73-yard TD pass.

Strong wrapped up his night with a 24-yard TD run to clinch the win.

"That kid never left the field the whole game," Fulton coach Mike Conners told The Post-Standard. "We had to use him at tailback because our regular guy (Don Watson) sprained an ankle against Mexico last week. Strong usually plays split end for us. Tonight, he turned in the game of his life."

The stat sheet: Tyler Brooks-Lambert threw for 122 yards and ran for 98 more to carry Midlakes to a 41-13 win over Class B No. 10 Geneva. Also in Section 5, No. 19 Hornell topped No. 16 Livonia 28-13 as Austin Dwyer rushed 25 times for 263 yards and two TDs.

Senior Tom Schreiber, who suffered a broken ankle early last season, threw for 116 yards for No. 7 St. Anthony's in a 41-14 win over Monsignor Farrell. He directed a 10-play, 89-yard drive and dashed in from 30 yards out on a keeper to open the scoring late in the first quarter.

"It's all about his feel and his vision out there," St. Anthony's coach Rich Reichert tolf Newsday. "We are very happy that he's back."

Kwaku Duah sacked Susan Wagner QB Jordan Rodriguez with less than two minutes to play, keeping the Class AA No. 15 Falcons from a game-tying conversion and clinching a 22-20 DeWitt Clinton victory.

New Rochelle put up four scores in a span of nine offensive snaps en route to a 42-6 victory over Gorton. Lewis Edney threw a 38-yard touchdown to Jonny McGhee and Julian Griffin followed a safety by returning the free kick 60 yards for a score. Jordan Lucas, Sir-Tay Jackson, Elijah Bracey and Jovon Ceneus ran for touchdowns for New Rochelle, ranked No. 4 in Class AA.

Class A No. 4 Aquinas rode Mike Messina (11 carries, 182 yards, two TDs) past St. Francis 36-7. Messina scored on runs of 83 yards in the second quarter and 63 yards in the third.

Following up: Section 1 ruled on Wednesday that Grton senior running back Joshua Grant had violated transfer rules (he formerly attended Yonkers) and was ineligible. Grant told The Journal News his family is appealing the decision and he hopes to play next Friday against Mount Vernon.

Williamsville South QB Joe Licata's record-setting night shrank a little bit upon further review. After watching film on Friday, Billies coaches adjusted his yardage in a 62-32 win over Williamsville North from 522 to 492 -- still a Section 6 record -- The Buffalo News reported.
