Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009: More problems for Binghamton U. basketball team
Leading off today: Less than two weeks after Binghamton University dismissed six players and the AD resigned, men's basketball coach Kevin Broadus violated NCAA rules when he spoke to a pair of recruits on Tuesday, FOXSports.com reported.

Monday marked the final day of the contact period in which coaches were allowed to speak to recruits at their school. However, Broadus and assistant Marc Hsu spoke to a pair of Fitchburg, Mass., Notre Dame Prep players, including 2009 Fairport graduate Michael Glenn, on Tuesday.

"I couldn't believe it," an assistant coach in attendance told FOXSports.com. "He (Broadus) was leaving and he took the two kids down the hallway up the stairs. They came out and both kids had business cards in their hands. I was shocked."

Broadus initially denied speaking to Glenn and Antoine Myers of Baltimore when reached Friday morning. However, both players confirmed that Broadus spoke to them about joining the program, and the college had to issue a release saying it was self-reporting an NCAA violation.

"He talked to both of us (Tuesday)," said Glenn, second-team All-Greater Rochester as a senior. "He said that he wants us to come visit the school."

"While we are reviewing the matter further, we are hesitant to offer any additional detail," BU spokeswoman Gail Glover said in an e-mail. "I want to assure you that when we have finished looking at the incident, we will let you know what sanctions and corrective action will be taken."

Boys soccer: South Glens Falls, unranked in Class A, broke up a scoreless first half and beat Class B No. 3 Broadalbin-Perth 2-1 in the Foothills Council last night. Jesse Lane scored first and Zach Horvath made it 2-0 four minutes later for SGF (9-2).

Williamsville North scored a 3-2 win over Class AA No. 2 Clarence, a state finalist a year ago. Williamsville North tied the game 30 seconds into the second half on a goal by Jason Harris. Matt Campana scored a pair of goals midway through the second half for Williamsville North (7-3), which was coming off a win over No. 18 Lancaster on Wednesday.

Milestones: Pittsford Sutherland tennis stars Clare DuBrin and Elena Vidrascu each picked up their 100th career victory in matches on Thursday.

McQuaid soccer star Stephen Baker, fresh off a recruiting visit to Villanova, scored career goal No. 100 of Friday.

Frank Miosek, in his 22nd season as Cooperstown's boys soccer coach, won his 300th game yesterday when the Redskins defeated Sherburne-Earlville 3-0.

Tuesday vs. Chaminade. He's in his 25th season as head coach after more than a decade as an assistant.

Boys volleyball: Dan Glamack's 19 kills helped Victor knock off visiting Rush-Henrietta 25-18, 25-23, 25-15 in a clash of Section 5 unbeatens.

Senior outside hitter Rob Page, who has committed to perennial NCAA Division I power UCLA, added 13 kills for the Blue Devils (11-0).

"These guys haven't reached their potential yet," Victor coach Dave Wisniewski told the Democrat and Chronicle. "We're not a senior-heavy team, we have juniors and seniors in the starting lineup, and we're just looking forward to getting better."

Drained: St. Raymond has now lost eight Division I-caliber basketball players in two years, including six since the end of classes last June, raising questions about whether coach Oliver Antigua will be able to keep the program viable.

Last month, Arizona recruit Sidiki Johnson transferred to St. Benedict’s Prep in New Jersey. Senior guards Steve Whittingham (New Rochelle) and Harold McBride (Bradenton Prep Academy in Sarasota, Fla.) also have left, The New York Post reported.

A confrontation in May 2008 between the coach and former player Kevin Parrom led to Parrom and teammate Omari Lawrence leaving for South Kent (Conn.), starting the run.

Recruiting guru Tom Konchalski told the paper Antigua is the same coach who guided St. Ray’s to consecutive CHSAA Class A titles after taking over for Gary DeCesare in 2002. He says St. Ray's may be suffering from an era in which players are easily swayed.

"There’s a lemming-like trend," Konchalski said. "When the kids left last year -— Omari and Kevin —- that put the idea in the head of the other kids. They are looking for the perfect situation."
