Kicking off: Hitting the highlights from the first night of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association football quarterfinals at locations across the state:

Class A: Junior running back Brandon Beatty set a career high with four touchdowns on just seven carries as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake blitzed Malone, 54-13 to advance to a semifinal next weekend against Cornwall.

Beatty scored on jaunts of 74, 14, 2 and 29 yards for Burnt Hills, which put up seven first-half TDs despite running just 15 offensive plays.

Tyree Smallwood scored on runs of 6, 65 and 82 yards as Cornwall eliminated Yonkers Roosevelt 31-21 by rallying from an early deficit. Smallwood scored twice in the second quarter for a 14-7 lead, and Kenny Kirshner threw a 29-yard TD pass to Dylan Babcock from punt formation in the third quarter.

In the other half of the bracket, defending state champ Sweet Home dominated in a 33-7 win over Aquinas as Pat McMahon put on an impressive show. McMahon (18-for-26) threw for 202 yards, ran for 93 on 12 carries and registered 1½ sacks.

Sweet Home has won 24 straight games since a loss to Aquinas in the 2007 quarterfinals.

Class B: Nanuet reached the semifinals for the first time since 1994 by ousting Highland Falls O'Neill 35-0 as Tom Hanney threw for one TD and ran for another en route to 95 rushing yards.

Schalmont earned a berth against Nanuet by posting a 34-20 win over Beekmantown after falling behind 20-7 in the first half.

Schalmont quarterback Vincent Gallo foiled the Eagles with touchdowns and 238 yards on the ground.

Schalmont stopped Beekmantown on downs with the score 27-20 late in the fourth quarter, and Gallo ran 62 yards on the next snap to trigger a four-play TD drive to clinch the victory.

Class C: Bronxville dominated Ellenville 34-6 by scoring on four of its first five possessions and surrendering just two first downs in the first half.

Bronxville drove 51 yards on four plays to a Will Karol 29-yard TD run to open the scoring, and followed a punt with TD runs of 2 yards by Brian Murray and 16 and 9 yards by Liam Berney.

Bronxville piled up 312 yards rushing.

Class D: Groton knocked off No. 1 Westmoreland 40-11

  • as tailback Ethan Tilebein rushed 24 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns, and the defense held the Bulldogs to 195 yards.

Groton broke it open with three touchdowns in the final 4:39 of the first half for a 27-3 lead.

Tilebein put up a 77-yard TD run in the first quarter and a 10-yarder in the second.

Groton next faces Randolph, a 14-6 winner over Dundee, a team that topped 70 points in three of its first 10 games.

Dundee took its opening possession 66 yards for a 6-0 lead and then gained just 100 yards the rest of the way. The Cardinals responded to that score with a 10-play, 66-yard drive for to a Matt Hettenbaugh (29 carries, 92 yards) 2-yard TD run.

Eldred put up two TDs in the fourth quarter to edge Tuckahoe 21-14 and set up a semifinal against 2008 state finalist Moriah.

With the score 7-7, Eldred unveiled a wildcat offense featuring running back Ian Halloran (27 carries, 111 yards) lined up at quarterback in the shotgun. It resulted in a six-play, 48-yard drive ending with a halfback option toss from Bobby Warden to regular QB Bryan Henry with 8:20 to play.

"We've been practicing it all year,'' Henry said of the wildcat. "They didn't know what to do with it."

Rensselaer's Jashem Hamilton swept 65 yards untouched for a touchdown on his team's first snap, but Moriah rallied to a 28-25 victory behind Ron Schofield's 41 carries for 210 yards and three touchdowns in a rematch of the Vikings' 19-0 victory a year ago.

Long Island: Garden City, which had defeated its first nine opponents by a combined 312-3 margin, escaped with a 21-19 victory against Carey after bolting to a 13-0 lead in Nassau Conference II action.

Brian Fischer's 97-yard scoring run one play after a fumble recovey gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter, but Carey's possessions immediately before and after the half ended in Greg D'Arienzo TDs to tie the score.

D'Arienzo scored again late in the fourth after GC retook the lead, but Carey's two-point conversion attempt failed.
