Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009: Rockville Center South Side one win from milestone
Leading off today: Rockville Centre South Side can become the champion of champions in girls sports with one more soccer victory today.

North Carolina recruit Crystal Dunn scored the goal late in the first half yesterday in a 1-0 victory over Eastchester in the NYSPHSAA Class A soccer tournament. It moved RCSS into today's final vs. Greece Arcadia, a 3-2 winner over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in sudden death.

With one more win, RCSS will have its 15th state championship in girls soccer for the most titles by any girls team in any sport. The Cyclones are tied with Saratoga cross country with 14 New York State Public High School Athletic Association trophies. West Genesee holds the boys lead with 15 lacrosse crowns.

Dunn was not present last year when RCSS's string of four state titles came to a halt with a 1-0 loss to Rye in the final because she had a commitment to the U.S. National Under-17 Team.

Eagles goalie Jenna Marino made the initial stop on the scoring play, but the ball bounded back to Dunn for a rebound goal.

"I was scared out of my mind when I saw her coming," Marino told The Journal News after a solid, nine-save day. "I was told all week about how great of a player she was. I made the save but the ball popped over me and I didn’t know where it was."

RCSS will take on a seven-loss Arcadia team that simply refuses to die.

"You can say we like to make it interesting," junior midfielder Allie Borrelli told the Democrat and Chronicle after her 12-yard shot with less than two minutes left in the fourth overtime beat Burnt Hills. "We just don't give up."

In recent weeks, the Titans came from behind to win the sectionals 2-1, then Kelly Shoniker's goal with 6.3 seconds left in the quarterfinals ousted unbeaten Williamsville East in state tournament action.

More OT action: Abby Maiello cashed in a feed from Alysa Russell and beat Livonia goalie Hanna Conine 3:11 into the first overtime as Mechanicville reached the Class B soccer final.

  •    It was the sophomore's 28th goal of the season for Mechanicville, which last played in a state championship game in 2001.

Field hockey: Sophomore Shannon Scavelli got loose on a breakaway seven minutes into sudden death and scored to give Lakeland a 3-2 triumph over Garden City in the NYSPHSAA Class B field hockey semifinals in Vestal.

"I knew it was just me and the goalie," Scavelli told The Journal News.

"Right before the overtime, I said, 'Shannon, there’s one forward, and it’s you. Don’t look for someone to pass to. You need to be the one to put the ball in the cage,'" Hornets coach Sharon Sarsen said.

Meanwhile, Jillian Richards kept Mamaroneck’s season alive with a goal with 1:38 to go for a 2-1 win over Ward Melville in Class A. Ward Melville halted the Tigers’ unbeaten run a year ago in regional action.

With Marathon beating East Rochester in Class C, all three defending state champs suffered losses one game short of the final.

Volleyball today: Round-robin action in the two-day NYSPHSAA girls volleyball tournament commences this morning at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The fields:

Class AA: Baldwinsville, Ward Melville, Canandaigua, Pine Bush.

Class A: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, East Hampton, Victor, Cornwall.

Class B: Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, John Glenn, Eden, Hendrick Hudson.

Class C: Loudonville Christian, East Rockaway, Buffalo City Honors, Tioga.

Class D: Chateaugay, Shelter Island, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Elmira Heights Edison.
