Leading off today: Brewster's Ali Pohill, Tottenville's Sara Giberson and Brooklyn Tech's Annie Zhu scored two individual victories apiece yesterday the the NYSPHSAA and Federation girls swimming championships in Webster.
After leading off the Brewster relay that tied Olean for honors in the 200-yard medley relay, Polhill won the 100 butterly in 55.20 seconds and the 100 backstroke in :56.45. Giberson won the 200 freestyle (1:48.23) and 200 IM (2:02.91). Zhu took the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke in 4:49.73 and 1:03.14, respectively.
Newburgh Free Academy freshman Brittany Friese swept NYSPHSAA honors in the distance freestyles and anchored a second-place 400 free relay. Competeing in here third straight state meet, she broke the Section 9 record in the 200 free (1:49.45) and took the 500 in 4:52.41 en route to second-place Federation finishes.
"I can't really explain how I swam," Friese told The Times Herald-Record. "I worked really hard this season and everything just fell into place."
Olivia Chan of Sewanhaka scored a NYSPHSAA double by finishing second to Giberson in the IM and and to Zhu in the breaststroke.
Girls soccer finals: Keara Hunt, LeAnn DiSisto, Caroline Kaplan and Lissa Mansfield, who have been together since youth soccer, capped their scholastic careers with a state Class AA tile as John Jay East Fishkill beat Syracuse CBA 3-0.
"We’ve played together our whole lives," Mansfield told The Poughkeepsie Journal. "All the girls did it for us. I appreciate it so much. I love them all."
Sophomore Sam McGuire sparked the win with a goal and two assists.
In Class A, Norh Carolina recruit Crystal Dunn scored three goals in the first half anf four overall as Rockville Centre South Side crushed Greece Arcadia 6-0 for its 15th NYSPHSAA championship -- a record for a school in any girls sport. Carly Beyar added two goals.
Liana Cornacchio scored on a header with 2:27 left in the second sudden death as Briarcliff beat Mechanicville 4-3 in Class B for its third straight title. Had the period ended in a tie, the teams would have been declared co-champs.
"It would not be the same as winning," Cornacchio told. The Journal News. "We would have felt like we lost."
Stony Brook captured Class C with a 2-1 win over Sauquoit Valley as Michelle Hennessy scored early in the second half.
In Class D, Arkport took honors for the first time since 2006 as sophomore Morgan VanScoter's goal late in the first half held up for a 1-0 win over Chazy.
Triumphant 'Toga: Saratoga fought off Shenendehowa 63-67 for its 17th Federation title in girls cross country at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls. Queensbury was third.
Cornwall ace Aisling Cuffe took individual honors in the 251-girls field in 17:38, nearly 300 yards in front of Shaylyn Tuite of Pittsford Mendon. Freshman Keelin Hollowood paced Saratoga with an 11th-place finish.
In the boys race, North Rockland took home team honors for the first time by putting up 132 points to fend off Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (169), Warwick Valley (192), Shaker (194) and Chaminade (198).
