Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009: F-M boys and girls teams advance in cross country
Leading off today: Fayetteville-Manlius easily qualified its boths and girls coss country teams for next weekend's Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore.

The F-M (63 points) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (105) boys secured the two automatic berths over North Rockland (113), Honeoye Falls-Lima (133) and 16 other teams competing in the New York Regional at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.

Senior Brendan Farrell led the way for the winners in 16:16.1 over 5,000 meters. Burnt Hills junior Otis Ubriaco (16:03.4) and HF-L's Alex Deir (16:08.5) were first across the line.

In the girls race, the three-time defending national champion Hornets (41) and Saratoga (77) easily advanced, with Shenendehowa (117) and Queensbury (123) positioning themselves for potential automatic bids.

Shen sophomore Lizzie Predmore (18:24.3) and Pittsford Mendon junior Shaylyn Tuite (!8:28.4) were first across the line. Jillian Fanning (fifh) and Katie Sischo (eighth) were first across the line for F-M, which placed five racers in the top 18.

Cuffe tears up the course: Cornwall junior Aising Cuffe crushed the 28-year-old course record by more than 21 seconds to win the Foot Locker Championships Norteast Regional at Sunken MEadow State Park on Long Island.

Running in windy conditions, she clocked 17:45.9 for 5K to top the 1981 mark of 18:07.5 by Christine Curtain of Mepham and win by 46 seconds over Kennebunkport, Mass., sophomore Abby Leonardi. Cuffe broke to the lead three minutes into the race and was comfortably ahead by the mile marker.

"I couldn't hear anybody behind me," Cuffe, the meet's third-place finisher a year ago, told The Times-Herald Records.    The top 10 individuals advance to the national meet Dec. 12 in San Diego. She was 12th at that meet as a sophomore.

"I'd like to at least place higher than that. That would be my first goal," Cuffe said.

  •    Other New Yorkers qualifying for the national meet were junior Colleen Schmidt of Point Lookout, N.Y., and Johnson City soph Lauren Mullins (ninth), who was ninth in Class B two weeks ago at the NYSPHSAA championships.

Bradley Miles of Hatfield, Pa., was the first boy across the line in 15:52.8. Ward Melville senior Quinn Raseman, second at the NYSPHSAA Class AA meet two weeks ago, qualified in 16:08.5 to lock down seventh place. There were no other New Yorkers in the top 20.

More champs crowned: Jevon Gardner broke a 48-yard scoring run with just under 4:00 to play, lifting Staten Island Curtis to a 16-10 victory over Tottenville for the PSAL championship at Midwood High School.

"Once I saw that open field, I was like, ‘Yes. Yes. Yes,'" Gardner told The Advance. "I didn't want to get too excited because the game wasn't over. But when I saw that end zone clear? Yes. Let's go."

Gardner, a late-season addition to an injury-depleted lineup, had fumbled in Curtis territory in the first quarter, setting up the Pirates' only touchdown. He was re-inserted into the backfield at the start of the fourth quarter, again as an injury replacement.

Curtis turned a blocked end zone punt into a safety and a 10-10 tie, The Warriors had third-and-6 at the Tottenville 48-yard line following the free kick when Gardner broke loose for his TD.

On Long Island, Freeport earned the Class I crown over William Floyd 38-14. In Class III, Half Hollow Hills capped a 12-0 season with a 42-32 win over Lawrence.
