Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009: CTK, Boys & Girls on track to reach final
Leading off today: Christ The King was dominating last night in a 65-45 victory over Villa Angela St. Joseph of Cleveland in the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic in Binghamton.

The Royals took control with a 20-5 run in the second quarter to build a 34-18 halftime lead. CTK senior Maurice Barrow led the way with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Kareem Thomas added 12 points, making three 3-pointers.

In another quarterfinal, Boys & Girls edged Maryland's Our Lady of Good Counsel 51-50 as Michael Taylor drained a 25-foot shot with five seconds remaining. Sean Wright gave Good Counsel a 50-46 lead with 2:07 to play, but Leroy Isler (16 points) made a bucket from inside with :56 to play.

Christ The King and Boys & Girls could meet in the tournament final.

Home for the holidays? Says who? Plenty of other top-notch teams have also traveled to distant places for tournament action this week.

Abraham Lincoln beat Bartow (Fla.) 70-56 as Shaquille Stokes and Raymond O’Loughlin each scored 21 points in the opening round of the McDonald’s Tampa Hoops Classic. In the same tourney, Winter Springs (Fla.) edged Forest Hills 56-53 despite 23 points from Maurice Harkless.

Thomas Jefferson edged San Benito (Puerto Rico) 47-42 as Dave Coley scored 12 points in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Hoops Classic. The Orange Wave will play DeMatha (Md.) in the final tonight.

Alumni news: Former Glens Falls star Jimmer Fredette lit it up for Brigham Young University last night, scoring a school-record 49 points in a 99-69 rout of Arizona. Fredette also set a McKale Center single-game record.

Bob Skousen set the previous school record of 47 points against UCLA in 1961, and the arena record was 45 points by Providence's Eric Murdock in 1990.

Fredette is 14th on the state high school scoring list with 2,404 points for Glens Falls from 2003-07. The junior guard went over 1,000 career points for BYU last week and currently leads his team in scoring and assists.

New format for U-E Duals: There's a 13-team in field this weekend for the Union-Endicott Duals, the big wrestling events that has undergone a format change this year.

In past years, the championship bracket was a pure-and-simple, single-elimination format. This year, however, teams will compete in four divisions on Saturday and the top squad from each will advance to Sunday's semifinals.

Invitations were extended to 40 schools before the season. Sixteen accepted, but three have since dropped out due to budget or schedule issues.

The field: Brentwood, Chenango Forks, Fulton, Greene, John Glenn, John Jay, MacArthur, Minisink Valley, Niagara-Wheatfield, Sayville, Spencerport, Union-Endicott and Valley Central.

Spencerport in the defending champion. The Rangers and Chenango Forks are co-No. 1's in the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings.
