Monday, Jan. 18, 2010: M-W quarterback Scalo says he won't play next fall
Leading off today: New York's co-player of the year in Class AA football has told college recruiters he won't be ready to play this fall.

Monroe-Woodbury dual-threat quarterback Dan Scalo, selected the New York State Sportswriters Association's co-player of the year last week, said his shoulder has not fully recovered from surgery in December 2008, The Times Herald-Record reported.

Scalo played his junior year with a torn labrum in his throwing (left) shoulder and had surgery after the season. He played in some pain throughout his senior season last fall.

"I don't want to go through all the stuff, and then not be able to play," Scalo said. "That wouldn't be fair to the school. I just don't feel like it's where it needs to be to play at the next level."

Scalo is still looking at colleges but has canceled some recruiting visits. The paper said Columbia and Bucknell have made offers, with Lafayette, Lehigh, Holy Cross, Albany and Wyoming still in the mix.

Scalo rolled up 33 rushing or passing TDs and more than 2,700 yards of total offense as a senior. He was named the Gatorade New York player of the year.

'Roos are rolling: Boys & Girls capped a big week with a 68-52 victory Sunday in the Frank Mickens Classic to snap Wadleigh’s 11-game winning streak.

Jeffland Neverson put up 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Kangaroos, and Mike Taylor added 15 points, while Antoine Slaughter contributed eight points and 11 assists.

Earlier in the week, Boys & Girls beat division foes Transit Tech and Thomas Jefferson as well as Long Island Lutheran.

"We had a tough week ... but my guys didn’t have a letdown," coach Ruth Lovelace told The New York Post. "It

just goes to show we’re maturing, getting better as a team."

J-D caps three-win weekend: Jamesville-DeWitt improved to 10-0 for the season with a 76-70 win vs. Albany Academy in the championship game of the Juggler Classic in Utica.

Six-foot-9 sophomore Dajuan Coleman scored 35 points and grabbed 20 rounds for the Red Rams, who defeated Syracuse CBA on Friday and Rochester's Bishop Kearney in overtime on Saturday.

Lamar Kearse added 19 points in the victory.

Cuffe gets the call: Cornwall junior Aisling Cuffe has been invited to run in the girls mile at the Millrose Games on Jan. 29. Cuffe barely missed securing the automatic berth at the Hispanic Games on Jan. 16 with a 4:54.84 effort, losing to Roslyn's Emily Lipari by 0.08 seconds.

New Yorkers Hayley McMahon (Arlington), Kelsey Margey (Harborfields), Lizzie Predmore (Shenendehowa), Colleen Schmidt (Holy Trinity) and Katherine Skinner (Riverhead) are also in the field.

New to view: I've been meaning to make mention of NYCapitalSports.net for awhile now, so this is as good a time as any.

Brothers Todd and Jeremy Smith started the site in the fall to cover Section 2 action, and the look and feel is similar to the more established NorthCountrySports.net in Section X.

It continues the trend of niche sites popping up to fill in the gaps as some of the more traditional media outlets have cut back staff and resources while at the same time spewing the mantra of "hyper-local" coverage.

Capital District fans of high school sports are fairly spoiled compared to many other regions of the state because the numerous newspapers in a relatively small geographic area compete hard against each other. Still, it never hurts to have another source of information out there.
