Wednesday, June 9, 2010: Garden City finally returns to lacrosse semifinals
Leading off today: Junior Tom Gordon fired into the upper right corner 52 seconds into the second OT to give Garden City a 9-8 victory over Comsewogue in the NYSPHSAA boys Class B quarterfinals yesterday at Hofstra.

The decider came after Garden City gained possession in a midfield scramble and forced the action in an unsettle situation rather than call timeout.

"I didn't want a timeout. I wanted that unsettled situation," Gordon told Newsday after finishing with four goals. "We run the fast break all the time in practice."

Gordon scored on a feed from Devin Dwyer, who finished with five assists as the Trojans reached the state semifinals after four straight seasons of losses in the quarterfinals.

Long Island's Class A final was far less dramatic as West Islip rode the work of Nicky Galasso to a 13-1 victory over Farmingdale to move within two wins of defending the state title. Galasso put up five goals and two assists to raise his season numbers to 60 goals and 61 assists.

The North Carolina recruit scored the game's first two goals to start a 12-0 run for West Islip.

Manhasset continued its perfect season in Class C with an 11-7 win over John Glenn as senior midfielder Pat Moroney scored five goals. The defending state champs built an 11-2 lead en route to their 34th straight victory.

"In the beginning of the season, I was a little worried that we're going to go down and lose a couple games," sophomore defenseman Rob Duvnjak told Newsday. "But we've gone undefeated, won every big game and have really stepped it up during playoffs."

Ithaca still perfect: Ithaca handed 15-time state champion West Genesee its second-worst worst loss in state tournament history, posting a 13-5 win in the Class A quarterfinals.    "That's as good a performance as we've had in awhile," Ithaca coach Frank Welch said. "To beat a quality program like that, it's hats off to our kids. We were fortunate tonight."

Ithaca (18-0) had its breakthrough moment a year ago with a 6-2 win over the Wildcats in the 2009 quarterfinals. The rematch was confirmation that the Section 4 program is now playing at an elite level.

"We didn't bring our 'A' game today," West Genesee coach Mike Messere said. "And you just can't do that against a team of this caliber. This is a very good team."

West Genesee suffered its worst state tournament loss since a 16-5 defeat at the hands of Ward Melville in 1977.

Spring tournament schedules
  • NYSPHSAA boys lacrosse
  • NYSPHSAA girls lacrosse
  • NYSPHSAA baseball
  • NYSPHSAA softball
  •    Section 5 sweeps: Section 5 schools scored their second sweep of Section 6 in four years in boys lacrosse quarterfinals at Canisius College.

Fairport downed Orchard Park 10-5 in Class A, Irondequoit topped Hamburg 8-4 in B and Class C Aquinas reached the semifinals for the first time by turning back Silver Creek 14-11.

Georgetown Cup sweep: Canisius beat St. Francis 3-1 to sweep the best-of-three Georgetown Cup baseball championship for the Buffalo area's CHSAA schools. Senior Nick Russo rapped a two-run double down the right-field line in the fifth inning for the go-ahead run, and Bill Brancatella threw a five-hitter as Canisius won back-to-back titles for the first time since 2002.

One tough girl: Barely three weeks after an emergency appendectomy, South Lewis' Mackenzie Colwell slugged a two-run home run and a double in a 9-5 state softball Class C quarterfinal victory over Binghamton Seton Catholic.

"I told my mom, and a few close friends who came to see me in the hospital, that I needed to come to the realization that I was done," Colwell told The Daily Times in Watertown. "Then 10 days later, when the doctor said he'd release me to play, I was ecstatic."

More softball: No. 2 seed Madison beat top-seeded Tottenville 5-2 in eight innings in the PSAL softball championship game on Sunday to end the Pirates' 102-game winning streak in league play.

Tottenville was the six-time defending tournament champion, including a 4-2 win over the Knights for the 2009 crown.

Greece cuts back: The Greece Central School District approved a $193.6 million contingency budget last night that eliminates freshman football teams at Athena, Arcadia and Olympia high schools.

In addition, the district's four high schools will cut a total of five baseball or softball teams at the freshman or modified levels.

Voters rejected the initial budget by a decisive margin last month, and the school board opted to not spend an estimated $47,000 to hold a new vote. The austerity plan increases the tax levy by 4.6 percent; the original plan had called for a 7.6 percent increase in the face of a $9 million drop in state aid.
