Leading off today: Junior Tom Gordon fired into the upper right corner 52 seconds into the second OT to give Garden City a 9-8 victory over Comsewogue in the NYSPHSAA boys Class B quarterfinals yesterday at Hofstra.
The decider came after Garden City gained possession in a midfield scramble and forced the action in an unsettle situation rather than call timeout.
"I didn't want a timeout. I wanted that unsettled situation," Gordon told Newsday after finishing with four goals. "We run the fast break all the time in practice."
Gordon scored on a feed from Devin Dwyer, who finished with five assists as the Trojans reached the state semifinals after four straight seasons of losses in the quarterfinals.
Long Island's Class A final was far less dramatic as West Islip rode the work of Nicky Galasso to a 13-1 victory over Farmingdale to move within two wins of defending the state title. Galasso put up five goals and two assists to raise his season numbers to 60 goals and 61 assists.
The North Carolina recruit scored the game's first two goals to start a 12-0 run for West Islip.
Manhasset continued its perfect season in Class C with an 11-7 win over John Glenn as senior midfielder Pat Moroney scored five goals. The defending state champs built an 11-2 lead en route to their 34th straight victory.
"In the beginning of the season, I was a little worried that we're going to go down and lose a couple games," sophomore defenseman Rob Duvnjak told Newsday. "But we've gone undefeated, won every big game and have really stepped it up during playoffs."
Ithaca still perfect: Ithaca handed 15-time state champion West Genesee its second-worst worst loss in state tournament history, posting a 13-5 win in the Class A quarterfinals.
"That's as good a performance as we've had in awhile," Ithaca coach Frank Welch said. "To beat a quality program like that, it's hats off to our kids. We were fortunate tonight."
Ithaca (18-0) had its breakthrough moment a year ago with a 6-2 win over the Wildcats in the 2009 quarterfinals. The rematch was confirmation that the Section 4 program is now playing at an elite level.
"We didn't bring our 'A' game today," West Genesee coach Mike Messere said. "And you just can't do that against a team of this caliber. This is a very good team."
West Genesee suffered its worst state tournament loss since a 16-5 defeat at the hands of Ward Melville in 1977.
