Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010: Suffern hockey off to 6-0 start
Leading off today: Move Suffern to the front of the pack in high school hockey following its 3-1 victory yesterday over West Genesee in the final of the Wildcat Classic at Shove Park.

Jon Fuchs broke a 1-1 tie six minutes into the third period off a pass from Willy Baker, and Jake Jaeger tacked on an insurance goal.

The outcome snapped a 26-game winning streak for West Genesee, the 2010 state Division I champion.

Suffern is already 6-0 in the young season. West Genesee is 1-1.

Constantino wins debut: Niagara Falls jumped to a 19-point halftime lead and held on down the stretch Friday to beat defending Section 6 Class AA boys basketball champion Jamestown 62-54 in coach Sal Constantino's debut with the Wolverines.

Junior guard Taijay Williams scored 18 points, including two three-pointers in the last four minutes.

Last night, Williams scored 20 points and Niagara Falls got a huge three-pointer from 6-foot-3 sophomore Jermaine Crumpton with 16 seconds left to beat Section 5 visitor Aquinas 47-44 in the Cataract Classic.

Aquinas broke to a 17-4 lead before Niagara Falls pulled even at 36 in the third quarter.

With the score 44-44, Jordan Street rebounded an airball to set up Crumpton's key shot with two seconds left on the shot clock.

"It felt good when it left, and it went in," Crumpton told The Buffalo News. "I've never been a part of anything like that."

More Cataract Classic: Williamsville North freshman Sterling Taplin made six three-pointers en route to 28 points as the Spartans recorded beat Batavia 56-53 at Niagara Falls High School.

In the next game, Williamsville South beat Canisius 68-67 on a three-pointer by senior Erik Hansen with :05 to go. Canisius had gone on a 19-1 run to lead 52-42.

The opener went to overtime with Wilson Central edging Lancaster St. Mary's 61-59 as Brennan Moxham made all 14 of his free throws en route to a game-high 27 points.

Freshman guard Johnathan Jackson's buzzer jumper carried Niagara Catholic to a 55-53 win over East Aurora.

McQuaid is 0-4: McQuaid has had down years, but the Knights are generally a Section 5 contender. Prospects aren't looking so bright this year, though, following a 101-98 loss to Franklin in OT that dropped McQuaid to 0-4.

Jaquan Herring (41) and Devon Davis (32) combined for 73 points for the Quakers (3-1). Herring made seven three-pointers.

Milestones: Kenmore East girls basketball coach Jack Blanch improved his record to 300-129 in his 20th season with a 62-26 triumph against Buffalo East in the first round of the Ken-Ton Tournament.

Blanch's daughter Katie and Jordyn Broas scored 14 points apiece to advance to today's final vs. Holy Angels.

Utica Proctor senior guard Brianna Kiesel broke the school’s career scoring record during a 64-59 victory vs. Syracuse CBA in the Lady Raiders’ Tip-Off Tournament. The University of Pittsburgh recruit scored 22 points to raise her total to 1,266, which is 21 more than former Penn State player Clara Carter’s mark.

Kiesel missed most of her junior season with a wrist injury.

University of Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma was in attendance as Cicero-North Syracuse beat Greece Athena 68-36 in the other semifinal. Highly regarded Northstars junior Breanna Stewart poured in 25 points.

Nazareth without star player: Brooklyn's Nazareth girls fell behind early and dropped a 57-47 decision to Washington, D.C., St. John's College, ranked No. 4 nationally
