Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007: Westhill's Ross sets single-game rushing record
Leading off today: Fort Edward, you're out of the dog house for now. Westhill, you're now on the clock.

With a 90-0 victory aleady on their 2007 resume, Westhill's coaches will undoubtedly have the added distraction this week of answering questions about why Dale Ross was rolling up yardage and touchdowns in the fourth quarter of last night's 55-14 rout of Marcellus in the Section 3 Class B semifinals.

Ross finished with eight TDs and a state-record 569 yards, blowing away the 2003 record of 467 yards by Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon. The eight TDs tied the sectional record set by Onondaga great Mike Hart.

Ross has gained 2,194 yards through nine games, but the question has to be asked: Why was he still carrying the ball in the fourth quarter? The seventh TD could arguably be forgiven, considering Marcellus actually held a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. But even Westhill supporters have to admit that the eighth TD left a foul odor to the game. Surely there must have been someone else capable of carrying the ball at that point.

O'Hara gives Ohio power a fight: Ohio state Division III champion Steubenville recovered a late Cardinal O'Hara fumble and held on to beat the visitors from Buffalo, 19-14, before an estimated 7,000 fans.

The loss snapped O'Hara's 25-game winning streak. Steubenville has won 40 consecutive games.

O’Hara trailed, 12-7, but stood first-and-goal at the 5-yard-line with just over six minutes left when Jackie Feggans took a handoff to the left. A helmet hit knocked the ball loose and Steubenville recovered.

More football: Second-ranked Maple Grove suffered an 11-7 loss at the hands of No. 12 Randolph in Section 6 Class D action.

Blake Morrison carried 24 times for 124 yards in the

victory. Maple Grove had just one possession lasting more than three plays.

  • No. 8 Eastridge blanked Rochester Wilson, 21-0, to set up a Section 5 Class A final against No. 1 Aquinas, witch turned back Victor by a 28-0 margin.
  • No. 1 Rye reached its fifth straight Section 1 Class B final with a 31-13 win over Westlake, but suffered yet another injury.
Soccer scrapbook: Andy Tiedt of Akron scored five goals in a 7-0 Section 6 Class B quarterfinal, raising his season total to 57 and breaking the state record accound to The Buffalo News.

The previous mark of 56 was shared by Brian Perry (Manlius Pebble Hill, 2001) and Andy Wright (Wilson, 1994). Wright was on hand and afterward offered Tiedt his congratulations.

Lest you think Tiedt is one-dimensional, he also has 20 assists this season. He has 121 career goals and intends to play next fall for Binghamton University.

Oneonta's late-season slump continued, resulting in the end of its girls soccer season with a 2-0 loss to Owego in the Section 4 Class A semifinals. Oneonta had been 14-0-1 before three straight home losses.

The Orchard Park girls, seeded first in the Section 6 Class AA tournament, were eliminated by No. 9 Williamsville North in the quarterfinals, 1-0.

Extra points: NYCHoops.net reports that Lawrence Woodmere Academy has left the Independent Private Parochial School Athletic League and is joining the Private School Athletic Association. Long Island Lutheran also left a year ago to go the independent route. . . . David Fischer, a Burnt Hills-Ballston volleyball player, is featured in a USA Today Q&A.
