Leading off today: Fort Edward, you're out of the dog house for now. Westhill, you're now on the clock.
With a 90-0 victory aleady on their 2007 resume, Westhill's coaches will undoubtedly have the added distraction this week of answering questions about why Dale Ross was rolling up yardage and touchdowns in the fourth quarter of last night's 55-14 rout of Marcellus in the Section 3 Class B semifinals.
Ross finished with eight TDs and a state-record 569 yards, blowing away the 2003 record of 467 yards by Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon. The eight TDs tied the sectional record set by Onondaga great Mike Hart.
Ross has gained 2,194 yards through nine games, but the question has to be asked: Why was he still carrying the ball in the fourth quarter? The seventh TD could arguably be forgiven, considering Marcellus actually held a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. But even Westhill supporters have to admit that the eighth TD left a foul odor to the game. Surely there must have been someone else capable of carrying the ball at that point.
O'Hara gives Ohio power a fight: Ohio state Division III champion Steubenville recovered a late Cardinal O'Hara fumble and held on to beat the visitors from Buffalo, 19-14, before an estimated 7,000 fans.
The loss snapped O'Hara's 25-game winning streak. Steubenville has won 40 consecutive games.
O’Hara trailed, 12-7, but stood first-and-goal at the 5-yard-line with just over six minutes left when Jackie Feggans took a handoff to the left. A helmet hit knocked the ball loose and Steubenville recovered.
More football: Second-ranked Maple Grove suffered an 11-7 loss at the hands of No. 12 Randolph in Section 6 Class D action.
