Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007: Schuylerville mourns Hume, teacher and former Olympic wrestler
Leading off today: Schuylerville Junior-Senior High School will be closed tomorrow so staff and students can attend the funeral of teacher Peter Hume, 54, who died late Monday. All activities, including sporting contests, will be postponed.

Hume, a history teacher who spent 13 years in the school district, had an extensive background in sports that included three years as a Canadian Football League player and a berth on the 1980 Canadian Olympic wrestling team. The towering teacher -- he was said to be nearly 6-foot-9 and 400 pounds -- also had a role in the film, "Meatballs," where he played the character of "The Stomach," and also coached football in Stillwater for a time.

MRSA update: A Brooklyn middle school student has died after becoming infected with an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection. The city Health Department said the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection (MRSA) is the likely cause of the death.

At least four more Long Island students have contracted MRSA, bringing to at least six the number of area students affected this month. The most recent cases were reported by the Southampton, Longwood and Freeport school districts, school officials said.

Students in the Baldwin and Sachem districts were diagnosed earlier in the month. The Sachem student is a football player and the Baldwin case also involed an athlete; it was unclear whether the others are involved in sports.

Upstate on Thursday, the Grand Island and Albion school districts each confirmed cases.

Health officials recommend frequent and thorough hand

washing as one of the ways to reduce the spread of staph. MRSA is treatable with antibiotics other than penicillin if discovered in time.

Discipline in Section 2: Two Colonie football players were suspended from school and the team after a drunken hotel party in September, police and school officials confirmed to The Times-Union.

The incident occurred after a loss to Troy on Sept. 22. According to Colonie Police Lt. John Van Alstyne, officers responded to a call of a party at the Homewood Suites on Wolf Road and found about two dozen teens at an underage drinking party.

School officials were notified and investigated. Besides the two suspensions, district spokesman John Noetzel said "quite a few" other football players performed community service involving cleaning school grounds after the incident.

Extra points: Did you catch the quarter-page ad in Thursday's Democrat and Chronicle sports section congratulating the Honeoye Falls-Lima girls tennis team for its sectional championship? If you believe the newspaper's rate card, that little tribute cost $5,700. More likely, though, it was discounted down to about a grand, still a nice chunk of change. If anyone's interested, you can rent the large rectangle ad position in the top right corner of this site's pages for $289 a week. . . . We messed up the boys soccer rankings in the print version of the NYSSWA newsletter this week. Cherry Vallley of Section 4 should be No. 9 in Class D.
