Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007: Sloppy fields the story of the day in Section 2 football
Leading off today: A safety was all of the scoing as Cambridge edged Chatham, 2-0, in the Section 2 Class C football semifinals yesterday.

Cambridge is ranked fourth and Chatham eighth in Class C by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

The winning points came when Chatham QB Zach Kraham lost control of the ball in the end zone of the rain-drenched field with 2:31 to play and shoveled it out of bounds to avoid surrending a touchdown. "It was like trying to run on the beach," he told The Times Union.

Chatham entered the game averaging 39 points and Cambridge 37.9. But the teams could manage only a combined 235 yards of offense.

It wasn't much better in Watervliet, where No. 17 Schuylerville pulled out a 6-0 win over the No. 11 Cannoneers in Class C action. Anthony Casimano scored on a 13-yard run with 4:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Casimano carried 21 times for 101 yards.

It wasn't all two yards and a pile of mud, however. Fort Edward cruised to a 40-0 victory against Rensselaer in Class D. Damian Tyler scored on runs of 1, 36 and 63 yards and returned a blocked punt 50 yards for another score. He ran eight times for 108 yards and was 3-for-6 for 104 yards in the air.

Sweet Home wins game, loses QB: Reserve QB Michael Wolcott directed a 14-play, 81-yard TD drive in the fourth quarter to lift No. 5 Sweet Home to a 25-20 victory over No. 18 Iroquois in Section 6 Class A action.

Wolcott entered the game after Casey Kacz left with a knee injury in the third quarter.

Sweet Home’s Marcus Johnson (29 carries, 246 yards) and Iroquois’ Brandon Murie (36, carries 241 yards) dominated much of the action. Murie’s 70-yard run in the third quarter had given the Chiefs a 20-19 lead.

Large-school bracket takes shape: Sophomore Danny Scalo ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as top-ranked Monroe-Woodbury rolled into the Section 9 Class AA title game by beating Warwick, 42-7. M-W has won 33 consecutive games against Section 9 opponents.

Next up will be No. 8 Minisink Valley on Saturday night at Dietz Stadium. H.R. Rotolo scored on a one-yard run with 4:16 to go as Minisink Valley rallied past Newburgh Free Academy, 10-6.

The winner between M-W and MV could be headed for a Thanksgiving weekend date in the Carrier Dome for a NYSPHSAA championship matchup, and the opponent might very well be No. 15 Canandaigua.

Canandaigua senior Kaheem Gist produced what the Democrat and Chronicle referred to as "cartoon-like statistics" once again as Canandaigua beat Rochester Marshall, 42-21.

Gist, who already has a pair of seven-TD performances on his resume this fall, scored five times and ran for 285 yards on 35 carries. The Braves never trailed after Gist's first touchdown run and Andy Knoblauch's extra point made it 14-13 just before halftime.

Gist has rushed for 2,029 yards through nine games.

More football: Defending state Class A champ Corning East will make its sixth straight trip to the Section 4 finals after a 15-12 victory over Elmira Free Academy.

Chris Parrillo gave the Trojans the lead with a 38-yard TD run on a double reverse with 2:23 left, and Corning East survived when EFA's 28-yard field-goal attempt with in the closing monents went wide left.

  • Senior Brett Hauber rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead No. 14 Deposit over No. 10 Groton, 26-14, in Class D. There were 24 penalties for 215 yards.
  • Also in Class D, No. 13 Dolgeville swamped No. 8 Weedsport, 54-8, by forcing six turnovers. Kelsey Brandow completed his first seven passes (three for TDs) en route to 136 yards through the air and also ran for a score.
  • Cam Konert ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries as No. 4 Bolivar-Richburg crushed No. 9 C.G. Finney, 50-0. Matt Appleby had three tackles for losses and a 15-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
  • On Long Island, Class AA No. 18 Longwood had a close call but edged Lindenhurst, 14-13, as Moses White made nine tackles, a sack, and an interception and scored on a two-yard TD run.
  • No. 5 East Islip beat West Babylon, 42-0, as Jim Brown ran for 193 yards and three TDs.
  • No. 21 Freeport edgeds Hempstead, 7-0, as Dermott Kramer scored on a 10-yard pass from David Wiggins on fourth down midway through the fourth quarter.
  • Lawrence, the No. 3 team in Class A, topped Carey, 14-2, as P.J. Preziosa went 8-for-11 for 140 yards and a TD.
Long losing streak ends: St. Lawrence broke a 45-game losing streak, the longest in the state, with a 32-24 victory against Malone in a Northern Football Conference crossover.

Harrier happenings: Saratoga's girls won their 12th consecutive Suburban Council cross country championship in a meet that is traditionally almost as good as half the sectional championship meets across the state.

Senior Hannah Davidson defended her individual title, covering 3.05 miles in 17:09 on a muddy course. 'Toga (33 points) fought off Burnt Hills (44).

Shenendehowa coasted to the boys championship.

Extra points: NYCHoops.net says 6-foot-6 St. Raymond's junior Kevin Parrom already has basketball offers from Pittsburgh, Rutgers, St. John's, West Virginia and Xavier, according to coach Oliver Antigua.
