Saturday, Jan. 19, 2007: Pioneer's Connelly eclipses 2,000 career points in girls basketball
Leading off today: Pioneer senior Joelle Connelly became the fifth player in Section 6 history to surpass 2,000 career points in girls basketball when she scored 27 last night during a 97-33 victory over Starpoint.

Connelly scored her 2,000th point on a second-quarter free throw. The game was stopped and she was presented the game ball. Connelly, who scored 21-first-half points, will play for Hofstra next season.

Churchville-Chili girls lose: Jessica Sexton scored 24 points as Greece Arcadia handed Churchville-Chili, ranked third in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association, its first loss of the season, 67-56.

Arcadia (8-5) made 20 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away in the home victory. Naquasha Britton added 14 points in the win. Saints starters Brittany Williams and Keanna Baker both fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

Short-handed Windsor loses: Matt Bobal posted 13 points and 14 rebounds for Chenango Valley in a 64-45 boys basketball victory over visiting Windsor, ranked ninth in Class B by the NYSSWA.

CV broke to a 19-5 lead over the Black Knights, who were short four players. Starters Joe DiNardo and Tip Martino served a one-game suspension, and reserves Matt Murray and Mark Murray are off the team, Coach Joe Costello said.

Canandaigua skaters lose: Aaron Capellupo and J.J. Englert scored goals as Irondequoit defeated Canandaigua, 2-1, in the first round of Canandaigua's hockey tournament.

Canandaigua (13-1) is ranked No. 1 in Division II by the NYSSWA.

Ithaca football coach out: Ron Amato resigned as Ithaca's varsity football coach this month after going 2-34 in four seasons, The Ithaca Journal reported. Ithaca was 1-8 in 2007.

"Ultimately I had an idea of what I thought it would

take to get the program to the next level," Amato told the paper. "Some goals I reached and some I didn't. I thought it would be a good time for someone else to step in and take a shot at it."

Ithaca is 7-53 in the past seven seasons. AD Bill Bryant said a steering committee will be formed to find candidates and the position has been posted within the school district.

Suffern's woes: A Rockland County prosecutor whose husband is the Spring Valley police chief allegedly threw wild parties for her son's Suffern hockey team, The New York Post reported yesterday.

Beth Modica, 44, who worked as an assistant village attorney in Sloatsburg and as deputy town attorney in nearby Ramapo, will be arraigned Tuesday when an indictment is unsealed, said a spokeswoman for the Rockland district attorney.

The spokeswoman would not release the specifics of the indictment, but a high-ranking official said Modica is suspected of providing alcohol and marijuana for some of her 16-year-old son's teammates on the Suffern Mounties.

The official also said she is also accused of having intimate relations with some players as young as 16.

"This is a very delicate thing . . . this is a very sad story for her family and friends," he told the paper. "It's a very shocking, disturbing and sad incident."

It was not clear whether Modica's son or her husband Paul were home at the time of the parties. Paul Modica declined to answer questions from a Post reporter.

A neighbor, who requested anonymity, said there were at least three summer pool parties, after which beer cans covered the street and even turned up in his mailbox.

Beth Modica was dismissed from her Sloatsburg job last month. Her boss, Joel Grossbarth, said the move was related to budget concerns.
